Gilbert Arenas understands exactly what Tracy McGrady meant when he argued that an MVP-level individual legacy can carry more weight than simply being part of a championship team.
Responding to McGrady’s comments about the value of individual greatness compared with winning a title, Arenas said he would rather be recognized as one of the best players in the entire league than occupy a secondary role on a championship roster.
“I would rather be a top 10 player in the entire league than be a rotational player winning a championship,” Arenas said.
For Arenas, the distinction comes down to how much responsibility a player actually carries. Championships are often used as the ultimate measure of success, but not every player on a title team contributes at the same level. A superstar can dominate an era without winning a championship, while a role player can collect a ring despite having a much smaller influence on the outcome.
Arenas illustrated the point with a classroom analogy.
“I don’t want a project A, I want to be the A student getting the A. I don’t want to be we got a C student and got a project A.”

His argument is that individual recognition reflects what a player personally achieved rather than what happened around him. Being one of the league’s elite players requires carrying an offense, attracting defensive attention, producing consistently and performing under the expectations that come with being a franchise centerpiece.
That does not mean Arenas is dismissing championships. His point is that context matters when rings are used to evaluate individual careers. A championship earned as the driving force of a team is very different from one won while playing a limited rotational role.
That is also the core of McGrady’s broader argument. An MVP identifies a player as one of basketball’s very best at a particular moment. A championship identifies a winning team, but it does not automatically establish where every player on that roster belongs in the league’s hierarchy.
Arenas therefore sees no contradiction in preferring elite individual status over simply having a championship on a résumé.
For him, the question is not whether winning matters. It is whether a player wants to be remembered as someone who happened to be on the winning team, or as one of the players everyone else had to worry about beating.
