Paul George said Tuesday that he understands any shock or anger Boston Celtics fans might have over the organization’s decision to trade Jaylen Brown.
In July, the Celtics sent Brown, the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, to the rival Philadelphia 76ers for a package that included George, two first-round picks and two second-round picks.
Brown, 29, was coming off a career year in which he’d averaged 28.7 points and kept the Celtics afloat while his former co-star, Jayson Tatum, missed the first 62 games of the season recovering from a torn right Achilles.
Brown finished sixth in MVP voting while leading the Celtics to a 56-26 regular-season record. Even still, Celtics president Brad Stevens decided to trade Brown, two months after Boston blew a 3-1 series lead in the first round of the playoffs to Philadelphia, the team George was with at the time.
“Listen, I understand the circumstances,” George said. “I understand how huge J.B. was, not only for the organization but here in the city. So I didn’t take it personal. To be honest, they should have a relationship emotionally to that trade. But my job here is to kind of come in to a great opportunity for me. Obviously, the last two years have been rough with injuries. But for myself personally, I feel great again.”

George, 36, played in 78 games in the two seasons he spent in Philadelphia. Lingering pain in his left knee significantly limited him. George was also suspended last season for violating the NBA’s Anti-Drug agreement. He returned to the floor in late March and performed well in the postseason, averaging 16.4 points on a 59.7 true shooting percentage.
“It’s a new group,” George said. “It’s a new opportunity. Again, I think they are getting someone that is ready to not fill the shoes or fill the void of J.B. (But) from a personal standpoint, I think I can come in and kind of still keep us in that contention and give us a chance to win.”
The Celtics have made the playoffs in 12 straight years. Boston won its 18th championship in 2024, when it compiled a 16-3 record during the postseason and defeated the Dallas Mavericks in five games in the NBA Finals. But over the past two years, the Celtics won only one playoff series, which helped persuade Stevens to shake up his roster.
“I will say this,” Stevens said. “I really like this group. I really think this group will be good.”
Before being sent to Philly, Brown’s name was attached to Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumors before the former Milwaukee Bucks superstar landed in Miami. Besides trading Brown for George, the Celtics added to their roster by signing Mitchell Robinson to a three-year, $47.4 million deal. Robinson, one of the NBA’s most productive rebounders over the past eight years, couldn’t attend the Celtics’ news conference Tuesday for personal reasons. Boston also added veteran point guard Mike Conley Jr., who was also introduced Tuesday.
Both George and Robinson will be key pieces next to Tatum, who was limited to 18 regular-season games last year but is entering this season fully healthy.
“We have a superstar, and that’s J.T.,” George said. “I’m not here to necessarily steal the shine or try to reinvent who I am. I’m here to help J.T., and he’s the guy. I have played alongside another superstar wing, and we coexisted beautifully. Myself, I see that with J.T.”
