Washington Capitals forward Ryan Leonard is staying put in D.C. after signing an eight-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday.
The $84 million deal, which carries an average annual value of $10.5 million, joins a growing list of lengthy and pricey signings coming in under the wire before the league’s new collective bargaining agreement takes effect at midnight. With more restrictive contract rules looming and the salary cap expected to balloon, teams are moving to lock up young talent long-term. Meanwhile, players are seizing their opportunity to secure sizable guaranteed paydays.
Leonard, 21, finished with 20 goals and 45 points in 75 games for the Caps over the 2025-26 season. He became the franchise’s eighth rookie ever to reach the 20-goal mark — and the first since teammate Alex Ovechkin scored 52 in 2005-06. The No. 8 pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and a product of Boston College, Leonard is due to remain in the nation’s capital through 2035 after his new contract kicks in next summer.
“Ryan is a young and talented player who is still years away from entering his prime, and we believe he has tremendous potential to continue growing into an important player for our organization,” Capitals general manager Chris Patrick said in a statement.
Patrick emphasized Leonard’s development will “take time,” but added he’s been impressed by the Massachusetts native’s work ethic and continued growth on the ice.
The deal represents a significant bet on Leonard’s upside. He has just 84 games of NHL experience, meaning Washington is committing eight figures annually to a player it expects to develop into a cornerstone of its next generation.
Leonard’s $10.5 million annual salary also matches that of veteran forward Alex Tuch, whom Washington acquired from the Buffalo Sabres this summer after a 33-goal season. At his young age, however, Leonard is being paid in significant part for the production Washington believes is yet to come.
The league’s rapidly rising salary cap could make the deal considerably more team-friendly over time. The upper limit jumped to $104 million this season and is projected to reach $113.5 million in 2027-28, diminishing the relative weight of Leonard’s $10.5 million cap hit as the contract progresses.
