Few NBA free-agency stories have aged into legend quite like DeAndre Jordan’s 2015 reversal on the Dallas Mavericks.
Mark Cuban recently revisited the chaos, recalling the moment Dallas realized the center who had verbally committed to the franchise might never actually sign.
“We waited for him to show up to the hotel, never did, called him, never did, showed up to his address, never answered,” Cuban said. “That was it.”

The story dates back to July 2015, when Jordan initially agreed to leave the Los Angeles Clippers for Dallas on a four-year max contract. The Mavericks believed they had secured one of the biggest free-agent additions in franchise history, and Cuban, Chandler Parsons and the rest of the organization began planning around him.
Then everything unraveled.
Jordan began having second thoughts and reconnected with the Clippers. Doc Rivers, Steve Ballmer, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, J.J. Redick and Paul Pierce all traveled to Houston in an effort to convince him to stay in Los Angeles. The now-famous emoji battle on social media unfolded while both sides scrambled to get to Jordan before the free-agency moratorium ended.
Cuban went to Houston as well.
He later explained that he booked a room near Jordan’s home and personally drove to the house after communication began breaking down. Cuban said he walked to the door, found nobody home and texted Jordan, who replied that he was on a date. Jordan did not ultimately meet with Cuban, and the Mavericks never got the face-to-face conversation they wanted.
The next day, Jordan largely stopped responding to Dallas while the Clippers contingent gathered at his home. Los Angeles stayed there until the moratorium ended and Jordan could officially re-sign. He ultimately returned to the Clippers on a four-year deal instead of joining the Mavericks.
The episode became one of the strangest free-agency reversals in NBA history because verbal commitments made during the moratorium were not binding. Dallas had spent several days believing Jordan would become its new centerpiece, only to watch the agreement disappear before contracts could officially be signed.
Jordan later apologized publicly to Cuban, the Mavericks and their fans, saying he was sorry for changing his mind. Cuban, however, said at the time that Jordan still had not personally spoken to him since communication broke down.
