Ryan Garcia carries the speed and left hook to hurt Terence Crawford, but his brief peekaboo experiment against Conor Benn would give Crawford numerous targets.
Ryan stopped Benn inside two rounds last Saturday. JoJo Diaz still noticed Ryan crouching behind both gloves for several seconds and questioned how that posture would hold up against an elite counterpuncher.
“Anything can happen in boxing and everybody is human. At the end of the day, everybody bleeds,” Diaz told FightHype. “You have seen with Terence Crawford, he has got hurt in the past, so without doubt Ryan Garcia could hurt him. If Ryan Garcia comes with that peekaboo style like how he did for a couple seconds in the last fight with Conor Benn, I think that Terence Crawford could take advantage of those opportunities. That peekaboo style of defense is not good.”
The defensive stance makes little sense for Ryan. Both men share similar height, while Crawford owns the reach advantage. Bringing his chin down to Crawford’s eye level grants the switch hitter clean angles to bring counters over the gloves.
Crawford would feast on the body. Working out of the southpaw stance, his lead hand occupies Ryan’s high guard while the straight left digs directly into the solar plexus and floating ribs. The moment Ryan drops an elbow to protect his ribs, Crawford comes back upstairs with hooks around the shell.
Tucking into a tight shell causes severe peripheral vision loss. Ryan cannot track quick lateral movement when his gloves stay glued to his cheekbones. Crawford thrives on stepping out at sharp angles, finding unprotected openings on the temple before Ryan even tracks the turn.
Benn charged forward on linear paths, handing Ryan ideal countering lanes. Crawford attacks from multiple levels. He tests guards with subtle feints, splits tight gloves with crisp uppercuts, and refuses to offer the same target twice. Crawford will not blindly rush into a loaded left hook.
Remaining locked on the inside invites further trouble. Crawford routinely ties up incoming arms, controls the back of the neck, and slips in short damage in the clinch before the referee breaks them. That smothering control completely neutralizes the leverage Ryan requires to whip his signature hook.
Diaz makes a valid point about the tactical flaw, even if landing a clean bomb remains Ryan’s perpetual puncher’s chance. Stunned moments happen, but banking on a single blow against a master tactician rarely ends well.
The peekaboo posture proved harmless against an overeager Benn. Against Crawford, it blinds Ryan, surrenders range, and leaves his midsection wide open. Crawford needs only one technical opening to dismantle an opponent, and that crouch delivers several on a platter.
