Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick says he is not close to losing his job and side’s poor form is not a “catastrophe or a disaster” or “the end of the world”.
In Carrick’s first full season in charge, United have lost three and won one of their first five domestic matches, including a 1-0 home defeat against 10-player Manchester City on Sunday and a 3-2 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
“We don’t like losing matches,” said Carrick, reacting to what he perceived as a reporter suggesting he had not been sufficiently moved by audible supporter disgruntlement.
“It’s not like I don’t feel the emotion, but it doesn’t affect what we do next. I need to show more emotion? In what way? What do you want me to show?”
Manchester United results: Carrick takes blame
United spurned a 2-0 lead against Brighton, ending their 145-game unbeaten home run – including 143 wins – in matches in which they had been two goals ahead.
“We live in a world of instant reaction and judgement, which is fine,” said Carrick, who made United the form team in the Premier League after being appointed on an initial temporary basis in January, including securing Champions League qualification.
“It is what it is, but it’s not in my world. Being realistic and understanding this would come and learning about each other is really important.
“That’s why I’m here. It’s my responsibility, I’m fine with that. It’s not a blame game. We always search for things to look at and find the blame; sometimes it gets too much [a case] of wanting to find the blame.
“Blame me. It’s no problem, but it’s not about blaming people. It’s about finding solutions. It’s a whole collective thing. It’s about what you focus on, really.
“I’m totally happy taking responsibility – no problem with that. I know where we want to get to and we want to get there fast.”

Michael Carrick: United future ‘not on radar’
United are already eight points off the top of the table and three shy of the likely Champions League qualification places. “I think it will be a lot longer than one or two games of results,” Carrick said of the prospect of losing the backing of his bosses.
“Taking away all of that, it’s irrelevant for me. I know the club, I know the role, I know what’s expected here in terms of playing at a certain standard.
“In terms of future and ownership and how long I’ve got… it’s ridiculous to think that way in the position I’m in. It’s just not on the radar.
“I understand where we need to be and what the owners expect. I get all that. It is just two or three games [in which] we haven’t had certain results. We’ve got to perform and we’ve got a lot of games to plan for.
“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. It’s the best place for me to be. Sometimes when it’s not going to plan, the best way is to work through it and come out stronger.
“It’s a period of time when small things can become big things for other people. The key for us is to stay focused, stay on track. It can happen, as much as we don’t like it.
“The fact it’s happened in the first cluster of the season… if it happened in November, it’s maybe seen a little bit differently. But I was expecting a spell we had to work through.”
