Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho all scored as Brentford secured their first Premier League victory since the opening weekend on a bruising night for Chelsea.
Former Burnley winger Anthony nodded home in the 61st minute and Thiago netted his first league goal of the season seven minutes from the end to sink a Chelsea side that offered little going forward.
Substitute Fabio Carvalho added a third in injury time to leave Xabi Alonso looking a beleaguered figure on the Chelsea bench.
Alonso’s side were hoping to bounce back from a defeat at Arsenal and a disappointing home draw with Hull but rarely threatened Caoimhin Kelleher in the Brentford goal.
Pedro Neto had a ninth minute shot palmed away by Kelleher and Morgan Rogers saw a goal bound shot blocked by Bees defender Jannik Schuster five minutes before the break in Chelsea’s only moments of hope in the first half.
And Brentford were little better in a drab first 45 minutes. It took Keith Andrews’ side almost 37 minutes to register a shot on target and, when they did, Yehor Yarmoliuk’s effort resulted in a routine save for Emiliano Martinez.

Anthony finally breaks deadlock to stun Chelsea
The second half threatened to follow a similar pattern although there were glimpses Brentford carried the greater edge – Anthony heading on to the bar although the offside flag was up.
He provided the breakthrough moment shortly after the hour mark, though. Mikkel Damsgaard’s left-wing corner was nodded back across goal by Jannick Schuster and Anthony was unmarked two yards out to nod in for his first Brentford goal.
Chelsea had a decent spell of possession after falling behind but did little with it with Joao Pedro’s absence through injury keenly felt. Danny Welbeck was superbly marshalled by the Brentford defence while Rogers was largely anonymous. Cole Palmer was Chelsea’s best player but even he struggled to make much of an impact.
Argentina international Valentin Barco, who was booed all night for his role in winding up England during the World Cup semi-final, had a shout for a penalty rightly waved away before Brentford added a second on the counter.
Chelsea crumble late on
Kevin Schade was played through and although his shot was saved by Martinez, the ball fell for Thiago to slot home.
The Brazil international, who was left out of Carlo Ancelotti’s latest squad, celebrated wildly, earning a yellow card for ripping off his shirt.
Maxence Lacroix ought to have halved the arrears but headed over in injury time and Carvalho showed him how to finish by latching on to Schade’s deflected cross at the far post to fire high into the net.
The win moved Brentford up to third ahead of the rest of the weekend games.
