Damian Lillard believes one of the biggest obstacles facing highly regarded young basketball players has little to do with their physical ability. Instead, the veteran point guard says the people surrounding them can make the transition to the highest level of basketball considerably more difficult.
According to Lillard, talented young players are often told how special they are long before they have developed the habits necessary to sustain success at the professional level. Surrounded by people who constantly reinforce their talent, they can begin to believe their ability alone will always be enough.
That becomes a problem when they encounter competition that talent can no longer overcome by itself.
Lillard pointed to the influence of “yes men” who repeatedly tell young prospects how great they are without challenging them to address their weaknesses, improve their work ethic or develop the discipline required to compete against the best players in the world.
For many highly touted prospects, basketball comes relatively easily throughout their youth. They dominate high school competition, attract national attention and arrive at the next level with enormous expectations. However, once they reach an environment where almost everyone possesses exceptional talent, the qualities that previously separated them from their competition may no longer provide the same advantage.
That is where Lillard believes their upbringing and support system become particularly important.
Players who have spent years receiving constant praise can struggle when they are suddenly required to accept criticism, adjust their roles or work harder than ever simply to remain competitive. Without the stability and accountability needed to navigate those challenges, their development can suffer.
The issue, in Lillard’s view, is not that young players should lack confidence. Rather, confidence needs to be accompanied by an understanding that success at one level does not guarantee success at the next.
His comments also highlight the difference between having people who support a player’s ambitions and surrounding oneself with individuals who are unwilling to deliver uncomfortable truths.
An honest support system can help a young athlete recognize areas that need improvement, maintain perspective during difficult stretches and develop the habits that allow talent to translate into long-term success.
For Lillard, the message is ultimately about preparation and accountability.
Being celebrated as an exceptional young player may open the door to the NBA, but staying there requires considerably more than the ability that earned that opportunity in the first place. When talent is no longer enough, the willingness to work, adapt and remain grounded becomes essential.
