Zach Cregger has given his biggest horror opening of the year, as his Resident Evil reboot clawed its way to the top of the domestic box office. It shattered franchise records in the process, surpassing even the director’s own Weapons.
Resident Evil beats all franchise records, opens bigger than predicted
Resident Evil debuted to $60 million domestically, blowing past early box office projections of $40 million to $50 million. International markets added $48.3 million, pushing the global box office total to $108.3 million in a single weekend (via Box Office Mojo).
That domestic number more than doubles the franchise’s previous best. Resident Evil: Afterlife, the 2010 installment starring Milla Jovovich, opened to $26.6 million and held the record for over a decade. Cregger’s film also outperformed his last release: Weapons opened to $43.5 million domestically before finishing its run at $270 million worldwide.
Sony bet $75 million on the reboot, the eighth film in the series and the studio’s second attempt at reviving the property. The first, 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, fizzled with $42 million globally against a $25 million budget. Critics and audiences alike have embraced this version. Resident Evil sits at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, while CinemaScore exit polls handed it a B+ grade.
The movie stars Austin Abrams as a medical courier who navigates a viral outbreak of monsters in Raccoon City. Abrams previously worked with Cregger on Weapons. Moreover, the box office win cements Zach Cregger’s standing as one of horror’s most bankable directors.
He broke out with 2022’s Barbarian before Weapons became a sleeper hit last August. Sony now looks to ride that momentum through the coming weeks, with strong word-of-mouth expected to keep the Resident Evil box office tally climbing. As the weekend’s only major wide release, the film faced no real competition for the top spot.
