Canelo Alvarez ended Billy Joe Saunders’ challenge with a calculated right uppercut on May 8, 2021, turning nearly eight rounds of body work and observation into a corner retirement at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Saunders entered the ring holding the WBO super middleweight title, demanding a 22-foot ring for his unification against Canelo. His father threatened to pull him from the card unless organizers approved the larger canvas. Canelo accepted the demand, yet the extra space never became the asset Saunders envisioned.
Canelo removed the challenger’s legs by digging downstairs. CompuBox credited Canelo with 39 body punches in less than eight rounds, landing 18 downstairs during the second round alone. Saunders initially circled, fired his jab, and escaped at angles. Every thudding body shot gradually drained the spring from his steps.
By the middle rounds, Saunders spent longer stretches along the ropes or trading in the pocket. The expanded canvas meant little once Saunders lacked the mobility to circle across it.
Saunders still produced productive spells. He outlanded Canelo 31 to 18 across rounds five, six, and seven, scoring with double jabs alongside quick combinations. Those punch tallies gave observers the impression Saunders was seizing command.
The impact of the punches told a different story. Saunders’ shots disrupted Canelo without causing distress. Canelo maintained his composure, conserved energy, and tracked the defensive pattern that ultimately decided the contest.
Under attack from outside range, Saunders habitually ducked forward, tilting to his right before attempting to clinch. That reflex had helped him slip wider blows during his amateur days, yet it placed his skull directly into the path of an uppercut. Canelo nearly timed him with the identical punch late in round four.
The sustained body assault widened that opening. Having taken punishing right hands to his ribs, Saunders had an urgent incentive to drop his head while tucking his elbows tight.
In the eighth round, Canelo baited a lead right hook from the southpaw. Canelo pulled his upper body back, watching Saunders drop his head once more. Canelo avoided the wide right hand Saunders expected to slip. Instead, he fired a compact right uppercut vertically through the gap.
Saunders plunged forward into the blow, multiplying the force of the collision. The impact shattered the orbital bones around his right eye, producing instantaneous swelling.
Canelo registered the severity immediately. Saunders threw just one jab over the final ninety seconds. Canelo raised his gloves, commanded noise from the 73,126 spectators, and stalked the wounded champion across the ring.
Saunders survived the round, then informed trainer Mark Tibbs that his vision had vanished. Tibbs called off the bout on the stool before round nine.
The official scorecards favored Canelo at 78-74, 78-74, and 77-75. Saunders underwent reconstructive surgery for multiple fractures around the eye socket, never boxing professionally again.
