Ben Davison will join Anthony Joshua’s corner preparations for Tyson Fury, handing AJ a voice familiar with the former heavyweight champion. That background provides useful intelligence, yet Davison’s recent corner performances show significant tactical flaws.

“I don’t know AJ’s final decision as to where he’s going to locate his training camp, but Ben Davison will definitely be involved in that camp and that process,” said Eddie Hearn during a media gathering. “There’s probably a feeling that Ben Davison knows Tyson Fury extremely well. For me, I think he’s one of the best trainers in the world.”

Hearn confirmed the situation while Joshua considers locations, including training periods alongside Oleksandr Usyk’s team.

Davison guided Fury through his early comeback bouts and manned the corner during the first Deontay Wilder clash. He knows Fury’s mental triggers, recovery patterns, and reactions to physical discomfort.

Trouble begins with Davison’s reliance on robotic sequences and static ring placement. Joshua entered the ring against Daniel Dubois prepared for a target practice session rather than a firefight. AJ planted his feet directly in the line of fire, giving Dubois a straight target for heavy right hands. Davison offered no adjustments between rounds, leaving Joshua completely exposed until the final stoppage.

Moses Itauma suffered the exact same tactical failure against Filip Hrgovic. Itauma burned out his physical reserves early, firing heavy combinations into Hrgovic’s fortified defense across the first three rounds. Davison never told his fighter to use light jabs, change tempo, or grab Hrgovic inside to disrupt the rhythm. Itauma was stranded without an alternate game plan the second his opening attack stalled.

Joshua cannot rely on a trainer incapable of managing mid-fight disasters.

The fighter Davison worked with back in 2018 does not exist today. That version relied on lateral movement and evasion to survive twelve rounds after shedding weight. SugarHill Steward completely rebuilt Fury into a destructive front-foot bully who uses his physical mass to crush opponents in the clinch and wear out their legs.

Fury looked sluggish, slow, and heavy in every appearance since his bout against Francis Ngannou. At 38 years old, his physical durability is severely depleted. Joshua still cannot train for the mobile runner from eight years ago when an oversized brawler will be leaning on his neck.

Juggling multiple philosophies creates additional risk. Blending input from Usyk’s camp with Davison’s rigid punch scripts risks locking Joshua in mental paralysis when he needs immediate offensive output.

Familiarity cuts both ways. Fury knows exactly how Davison structures offensive combinations, how he times counter punches, and what traps he sets. Davison can supply information on old habits, but relying on him will never hand Joshua a decisive edge.

Handing Davison the steering wheel for a fight of this magnitude invites disaster. The losses against Daniel Dubois and Filip Hrgovic showed the exact same fatal corner flaw: Davison builds a rigid offensive script in camp, and the second a durable opponent shatters that script, he has no working tools to stop the bleeding.

Against Dubois, Joshua was drilled to stand tall, set his feet, and look for rehearsed counters off the center line. It looked like an offensive pad drill where the target never hits back. Dubois marched straight through the initial shots, uncorked the right hand over Joshua’s low guard, and Davison sat in the corner looking stunned. Not once did he tell Joshua to take an angle, tie Dubois up inside, or move his feet laterally off the power hand.

The breakdown with Moses Itauma against Hrgovic was an identical replay. Itauma emptied his entire reserve tank across the first three rounds loading up on full leverage hooks into Hrgovic’s fortified guard. Davison never told his 21-year-old prospect to dial back the power, use light probing jabs to displace the gloves, or clinch to kill the pace. When Hrgovic took the punishment, weathered the storm, and turned the fight into deep-water manual labor, the corner was paralyzed. Itauma hit round seven with dead legs, and Davison had zero answers.

Joshua already struggles with overthinking and hesitation. When you flood his ear with Davison’s robotic sequence patterns, you get an inactive fighter trying to process data while punches are in flight. Against Tyson Fury, that hesitation will get him walked down, bullied on the ropes, and drained in the clinch.

Putting Davison in a strictly subordinate role makes complete sense. Use him as an intelligence asset during early planning. He can map out Fury’s daily training psychology, ring habits, and old defensive tendencies. Once that scouting report is delivered, he needs to stay quiet. If Davison takes over the head trainer role and begins planting complex offensive routines into Joshua’s head, AJ will walk into the ring over-rehearsed, static, and wide open for another corner collapse.
