Cregger’s next directorial effort, The Flood, is officially moving forward, and he says it will rank as his most disturbing work to date. The director confirmed they are casting now and in “soft prep.” He expects to begin hard prep in February, with filming targeted for next summer. If that schedule holds, production could start in summer 2027.
“It’s science fiction, and it’s probably my most disturbing film. It’s not a horror movie, but it has a lot of horror in it. I love it. I think it’s really, really special. I’m excited about it,” Cregger told ScreenRant while giving a sneak peek of The Flood. That claim lands with weight. Cregger broke through with 2022’s Barbarian and followed it with 2025’s Weapons, both of which became known for unpredictable twists. Resident Evil then handed him zombies, mutations, and body horror to work with. Calling The Flood his darkest film despite that track record raises expectations considerably.
Zach Cregger draws a clear line between genre labels and what The Flood actually will be. He calls it science fiction rather than horror, though he admits horror runs heavily through its DNA. He has compared parts of the movie to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey and hinted at an experimental approach to sci-fi storytelling. What makes The Flood so disturbing remains unknown. Cregger gave no plot details when asked, leaving audiences to speculate about where he plans to take them.
