Michael Fassbender’s new alien movie just broke a long-standing Korean sci-fi record in the U.S. The film’s domestic struggles tell a different story from its worldwide performance, and its director already has sequel plans.
Michael Fassbender’s Hope beats all Korean movies at domestic box office, except two
Na Hong-jin’s sci-fi epic Hope has carved out a rare achievement for Korean cinema in North America. According toBox Office Mojo, the film has earned approximately $7 million domestically since its September 9 release. That total makes it the third-highest-grossing Korean film in U.S. box office history.
Only two Korean productions sit ahead of Hope at the domestic box office. Animated hit The King of Kings holds the top spot with $83.5 million in total U.S. earnings. Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning Parasite follows with $53.8 million. Hope has already surpassed Snowpiercer’s $4.56 million U.S. total, a long-standing benchmark for Korean sci-fi.
The film’s global performance tells a broader story. Hope has earned approximately $44 million worldwide against a reported budget of $46 million. South Korea contributed over $35 million of that total. The worldwide number gives the film a realistic path toward breaking even.
Despite the lukewarm domestic performance, director Na Hong-jin has already teased sequel plans. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he said, “As I was developing the story, it got longer, and I realized I would need at least a sequel, or maybe three films, to tell the whole thing.” He also teased a darker tone for the follow-up. “The first film takes place entirely in the daylight, but the sun is setting as we get to the end, right?” Na added.
The director further hinted at a bold narrative shift for Hope 2. Na teased protagonist Bum-seok’s fate, saying, “He’s still alive and in the fight, right? Don’t be surprised if he crosses over to the North.” Turning the story into a trilogy will require stronger box office results moving forward. Hope stars Hwang Jung-min, Jung Ho-yeon, Zo In-sung, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton.
