Vergil Ortiz Jr. could return on the December 12 David Benavidez–Michal Cieslak card, with Keith Thurman among the names being discussed. If Thurman gets the fight, Ortiz will face a 37-year-old coming off a sixth-round stoppage loss to Sebastian Fundora. It is hard to see what Ortiz gains beyond a recognizable name.

Ortiz has not fought since stopping Erickson Lubin in November 2025. After more than a year away, his team may want a familiar opponent for his return. Fans are entitled to want more. Thurman has fought only three times since 2019, and his name carries more value at this point than a win over him would.
Jesus Ramos Jr. was another name Mannix mentioned. Ramos is younger, bigger, and far more relevant to Ortiz’s future at 154. If Ortiz takes the Thurman fight, that alone would not prove he avoided Ramos; we do not know what either camp has offered or agreed to. It would, however, leave the obvious question hanging: why bring back a man Fundora just stopped when a prime contender is also being discussed?
Thurman’s counters could make Ortiz think before charging in. Ortiz would still have to cut off the ring and work his way past a skilled former champion. But asking Thurman to handle Ortiz’s sustained pressure and body attack after what happened against Fundora looks like a harsh comeback fight for him and a modest test for Ortiz.
A December date would get Ortiz back in action. His choice of opponent will determine whether it does anything more. Rolling Thurman out for Vergil Ortiz Jr. is cynical matchmaking, and boxing fans see right through it.

Matching Ortiz with Thurman is an insult to the fans. If Ortiz wants respect at 154, he needs to face someone like Jesus Ramos Jr., who will actually punch back.
Thurman spent his night against Fundora running for survival until the referee finally halted the slaughter. Putting Vergil in the opposite corner is simply arranging another public execution. Vergil is an inside destroyer who targets the ribs and breaks fighters down. Thurman has shown for years that he folds the moment clean shots dig into his midsection. A knockout over a 37-year-old shell who fights once every blue moon proves nothing. It produces a cheap highlight reel clip for social media, but real fight fans know it is completely empty calories.
