Lee Child revealed in an exclusive Collider interview why Frances Neagley became the first Reacher spin-off on Prime Video. The author explained that Maria Sten’s portrayal of the character drove the decision entirely. He spoke with the outlet while promoting his upcoming novel, Chain Reaction.
Neagley originally served a practical purpose on the show. Child noted that Reacher’s internal thinking doesn’t translate well to television. The character gave Reacher someone he trusted enough to talk to on screen. She helped externalize his thought process through natural back-and-forth dialogue.
Child admitted that Sten completely transformed his connection to the character. He stated that when he thinks of Neagley, he now sees Sten in the role. That reaction differs from how he views Alan Ritchson as Reacher. Child said he still sees his own version of the protagonist after decades of writing him.
The author credited Sten’s performance for pushing Neagley far beyond her original scope. He said Sten “stole that character” and “grabbed it and ran home with it.” Child added that Neagley could have remained just an exposition device in the early seasons. However, Sten’s work “basically demanded a spin-off just by being there.”
On the page, Reacher operates as a solitary thinker who processes problems internally. A voiceover approach would have felt forced and uncompelling for television audiences. Neagley solved that problem because she ranks among the few people Reacher genuinely trusts. Sten then elevated the role beyond a functional storytelling tool into something worthy of its own series.
The spin-off series Neagley premiered on Prime Video on September 16, 2026. Child will also co-write Zero Margin, the first Frances Neagley novel, with Yasmin Angoe. That book arrives in spring 2027.
