Liverpool are among several clubs interested in re-signing midfielder Tyler Morton, a year after the Englishman left Anfield.
Morton joined Ligue 1 side Lyon for £15million after spending 16 years on Merseyside, where he graduated through the club’s academy before making his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup clash against Norwich City in September 2021.
The 23-year-old went on to make 14 appearances for the Reds while spending two campaigns on loan in the Championship, joining Blackburn Rovers in 2022/23 and then working under Liam Rosenior at Hull City in 2023/24.

Liverpool join seven Premier League clubs in Tyler Morton race
Morton’s exit was sanctioned by Arne Slot after he was not guaranteed a place in the Dutchman’s first-team plans last term, instead preferring the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch in central midfield.
In an exclusive interview with SPORTbible in October 2025, the Englishman said of Slot: “I think he thought I was a good player, but I don’t feel the trust was there as much.
“In my opinion, the limited opportunities were down to trust and not ability.
“When I got my opportunity in the cup, I felt like I played well. That’s all I could say. I stuck at it, stayed focused, got through to the end of the season and played in the under-21 Euros, which was amazing.”
But it appears the two-time Premier League champions are already regretting that decision, as Morton has become one of Europe’s finest midfielders in France, where he’s featured 53 times in all competitions and contributed six goal involvements.
There has even been talk of Morton breaking into Thomas Tuchel’s England squad after establishing himself in the heart of Paulo Fonseca’s plans at Lyon.
Unsurprisingly, the all-action midfielder has garnered attention from seven Premier League sides – according to TEAMtalk – with Liverpool joining Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Brighton, Newcastle, Sunderland and Everton in the race for his signature.
Morton’s ‘ability to operate in the heart of midfield’ and his ‘growing experience at the highest level’ are said to have made him an attractive option for clubs looking for a player to make an immediate impact.
The report adds that Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola is an ‘admirer’ of the once England under-21 international, which perhaps presents an opportunity for the Reds to reverse their error of selling the talented midfielder prematurely.
Tyler Morton’s parting comments point towards future Liverpool return
As a lifelong Liverpool fan, it was undoubtedly emotional for Morton when he exited Anfield last year, and this was reflected in his parting message to the supporters.
“When you spend 17 years at a club, the fans, players and staff feel like family to you. It’s more than just football,” Morton posted on social media in August 2025.
“I could sit here all day and talk about the memories I experienced throughout my time at Liverpool, but I just want to express how grateful I am to this club!
“The people around this club have taught me so much and completely shaped me into the person I am today.
“First of all, to the staff, players and all my teammates I have worked with, you have been people I will remember for life. In my hardest times they were always there for me and at my best times they never changed.
“To the staff, I’m forever grateful for the opportunity you have all given me to play for this club, from the age of five until now all the staff I have come across have guided me and allowed me to be the player I am today and the work they put in behind the scenes at all ages should never go unnoticed.
“Finally, to the Liverpool fans, thank you for looking after me and my family always. If I was on loan or at the club I always felt loved and a part of this incredible football club.
“You backed me through anything, and I hope you know I gave it my all for you because that is the least you deserve!
“A lot of change in 17 years, but one thing that will never change is my love for the club. I will always be a Liverpool fan.
“You’ll never walk alone.”
After establishing himself as a top-quality midfielder in one of Europe’s top five leagues, Morton will surely be open to returning to Anfield.
