Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are listed to fight December 11 in Cardiff. If the dispute over Dana White’s involvement kills the bout, it will not produce one clean announcement and a replacement poster. The first question will be who pulled out. The next will be who pays. Fans may wait longer for answers than they did for the fight.
First, each side explains why the deal failed. Hearn says White has no promotional role, while Fury’s side has already questioned delays during the earlier venue dispute. If Cardiff falls through, expect both camps to point to the other side’s demands. That does not mean either fighter planned an escape. It means a public disagreement gives each camp an argument to make. The fight remains on Matchroom’s schedule.
Next, the contracts come under scrutiny. Joshua’s agreement required a UK venue, which helped bring the event to Cardiff. Hearn also says Joshua was required to begin drug testing when he signed, while Fury’s contract did not specify the same starting point.
That difference does not establish wrongdoing by Fury. It does show why “both fighters signed” has never answered every question about this event. If it is canceled, the wording of those agreements will matter far more than either promoter’s social media account of what happened.
Then someone has to deal with the Cardiff date. Principality Stadium was chosen for a fight capable of drawing a huge crowd and a global Netflix audience. Venue arrangements, broadcast production and other commitments would need sorting out. The public has not seen the agreements, so there is no sound basis for naming who would owe a cancellation payment or claiming Matchroom bears the stadium costs alone.
Only then does a replacement become a serious question. Terence Crawford against Ryan Garcia has been floated, but Crawford’s surprised reaction hardly suggested a deal was ready. Putting two famous names on the bill would still require negotiations, a workable broadcast arrangement and an audience willing to travel to Cardiff for a different fight. Fury against David Benavidez is even less convincing as an instant substitute. Neither rumor guarantees that the December 11 show survives.
Finally, Joshua and Fury look for separate fights. Each remains a valuable attraction, though both are past their physical peaks. A defeat to the other on Netflix would be costly to the loser’s future earning power; a cancellation would spare them that result while costing them a major payday now. There is no evidence either man wants that trade. Fury has already mentioned Oleksandr Usyk during a previous flare-up, but mentioning an opponent is easier than booking one.
Fans have heard a version of this before. Plans for Joshua–Fury collapsed in 2021 after an arbitration ruling required Fury to face Deontay Wilder. If Cardiff fails too, the promoters can argue for months about contracts, venues, and control. The answer fans care about will be simpler: once again, Joshua and Fury did not fight.
