Chelsea are in battle with Liverpool in the race to sign Inter Milan centre-back Alessandro Bastoni, according to TEAMtalk.
Bastoni joined Inter from Atalanta in 2017 and was initially integrated into the club’s academy setup, where he impressed for both the U17 and U19 sides.
The 27-year-old made the move from Atalanta to Inter in 2017, initially joining the club’s academy setup and impressing for both the U17 and U19 teams.
Loan spells with Atalanta and Parma Calcio 1913 provided the defender with valuable senior experience before he finally made his Inter debut in 2019.
The Italian has played an important part in one of the most successful eras in Inter’s recent history, helping them win three Serie A titles, including their latest triumph, alongside two Coppa Italia trophies and three Supercoppa Italiana crowns.
After playing a key role in Inter’s 21st Scudetto title last season, Bastoni has begun the ongoing campaign in rock-solid form, featuring in all five Serie A games this season, which has led to keen interest from several clubs.
Among the interested clubs, TEAMtalk claims that Premier League duo Chelsea and Liverpool are set to battle to sign Bastoni in 2027.
‘World-class’ centre-back
For Chelsea, the London giant are admirers of the 27-year-old due to his defensive and technical qualities to operate in a three-man defence, making him a suitable fit under Xabi Alonso, according to the report.
On the other hand, the report adds that Liverpool are assessing several centre-backs ahead of 2027 and have placed the 6ft 2in on their radar, having done extensive checks on him as they gear up for the post-Virgil van Dijk era.
In a boost to Liverpool and Chelsea, TEAMtalk reports that despite Bastoni’s preference to join Barcelona in the summer, intermediaries have informed the duo that the defensive colossus is also open to moving to the Premier League
While Inter are in no hurry to sell their talisman, the club could be open to doing business if they receive offers in the region of £70m for the Italian international, who is also of keen interest to Manchester City.
Described as ‘world-class’ by former Inter coach Simone Inzaghi, Bastoni would undoubtedly be a solid addition to either Chelsea or Liverpool’s backline. Looking at his achievements and performances at the highest level, he is very much worth £70m, so it’ll be interesting to see which of the heavy-spending duo will splash the cash to sign him in 2027.
