Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua had a trophy held above their heads at Wednesday’s London press conference, but the more questionable prize reportedly attached to their fight received no mention: the WBA “super” heavyweight title.
The Battle of Britain trophy gives their long-delayed rivalry its own prize. Adding world championship status requires a sporting explanation, and the size of the event cannot supply one.
“No mention at this presser of the fact that it is for the absurd WBA ‘super’ title,” Dan Rafael wrote on X.
Rafael separately clarified that the unfamiliar belt Turki Alalshikh held during the faceoff was a trophy bearing the words “Battle of Britain.” That explains the belt displayed above the fighters. It leaves the justification for the reported WBA title stakes unanswered.
Fury against Joshua trades heavily on unfinished business. Fans spent years wanting this matchup, and finally getting it gives the promotion something valuable to sell. But the anticipation built around earlier versions of both men. A fight arriving this late cannot simply inherit the sporting significance it might once have carried.
That is the nostalgia trap. Familiar names and an old rivalry can still attract a huge audience, while championship gold encourages viewers to treat the occasion as a fresh contest for heavyweight supremacy. Those are separate propositions.
The custom trophy is sufficient recognition for settling their British rivalry. Whoever wins gets the satisfaction of beating the other and a prize created for the occasion. A WBA “super” championship makes a broader claim about the winner’s standing in the division.
According to Rafael, that claim went unaddressed at the podium. The silence does not establish why organizers omitted it, but it leaves an obvious question unanswered: what sporting criteria justify giving Fury and Joshua this championship opportunity ahead of other contenders?
The WBA should explain that decision. Fury and Joshua’s drawing power makes the commercial case clear enough. Their names alone do not establish the championship case.
They can settle years of arguments by fighting each other. The result should not acquire greater sporting authority merely because another belt is attached.
