Russell Crowe and his 2000 historical epic action-adventure film remain closely linked for years, with the actor now revealing why he rejected an early sequel idea. Crowe described the original pitch as dumb while discussing the proposed story.
Russell Crowe says an early Gladiator sequel pitch for Maximus was “pretty dumb”
Russell Crowe starred as Maximus Decimus Meridius in Ridley Scott‘s 2000 epic Gladiator. The movie became a major box-office success and remains highly regarded by audiences and critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Gladiator eventually received a sequel in 2024. Gladiator II continued the story without Crowe, with Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Denzel Washington joining the cast. Ridley Scott also returned to direct the sequel.
Speaking with ScreenRant, Crowe discussed his views on sequels and revealed that he had been approached about continuing some of his characters. He said, “It definitely was conscious for the first 20 or 30 years, where, because I grew up in an era where a sequel was always, a really bad version of the first one.”
He explained that studios sometimes focused more on the financial side. Crowe admitted that his opinion has changed. He noted that some sequels have become iconic or legendary. He mentioned characters like Gabriel Moorth from The Pope’s Exorcist and Jack Aubrey from Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, he would have liked to explore further.
Crowe then discussed the early idea for a Gladiator sequel. He admitted that he might not have been as negative about the idea today, but he strongly disliked the original pitch.
He said, “Now I wouldn’t have been so negative about a gladiator sequel back, you know, as I was back in the day. But I have to sort of put that in perspective, right? In that situation the solution that they originally came to me with was pretty dumb.”
Crowe remembered his reaction to the idea, saying, “that’s a different book. What are we doing here?” He admitted that he didn’t really see eye to eye with them at the time. However, Crowe now believes some characters can have bigger lives.
The 2024 sequel expanded the franchise with a new generation of characters. However, Crowe’s latest comments reveal just how different the original sequel plans could have been.
