This Ethan Hawke-led acclaimed thriller will leave Netflix next week
Next week will be the last window for subscribers to stream First Reformed on Netflix before it leaves the platform. As reported by What’s on Netflix, the Ethan Hawke-led thriller is listed among the titles being removed from the platform on October 8.
First Reformed premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August 2017 and opened in U.S. theaters on May 18, 2018. The film follows the lonely, grieving Reverend Ernst Toller at the historic First Reformed Church in upstate New York. He is haunted by his son’s death in the Iraq War. The tragedy also broke his marriage and left him isolated.
His life takes a dark turn when Mary, a pregnant parishioner, asks him to counsel her husband Michael. Michael is a radical environmental activist consumed by despair over climate change and ecological collapse. He is convinced that bringing a child into a dying world would be cruel. Following further tragedy, Toller is left carrying his grief and apocalyptic fears.
The film’s cast is headed by Ethan Hawke as Reverend Ernst Toller and Amanda Seyfried as Mary Mensana. The ensemble also features Cedric the Entertainer as Pastor Joel Jeffers, Philip Ettinger as Michael Mensana, Victoria Hill as Esther, and Michael Gaston as Edward Balq. Paul Schrader wrote and directed the movie, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
During its theatrical run, the film grossed over $3,871,000 worldwide, with most of its total coming from domestic theaters.
