Wayne Rooney might not feel comfortable accepting a retrospectively awarded Premier League medal, but former Manchester United teammate Paul Scholes would be more than happy to take the glory.
Earlier this week, Rooney played down the prospect of accepting a medal if Manchester City are stripped of their Premier League title from the 2011-12 campaign for breaching the competition’s financial rules.
Of course, United finished level on points with City that season, but Roberto Mancini’s side secured a first top-flight title on goal difference after Sergio Aguero scored that goal against Queens Park Rangers.
The comments from Rooney came after City were found guilty of all charges relating to serious breaches of its financial rules following a ruling by an independent commission.
“I wouldn’t feel comfortable about accepting another Premier League medal if I’m being honest, because I don’t think we deserve it,” Rooney said on the Stick to United podcast with Mark Goldbridge.
“We didn’t do enough that season to win the league. I’m thinking as their players, they’re doing everything they can to win the Premier League title and in their minds they’ve done it.”
Rooney added: “If that happened to me, if all of a sudden Manchester United have been doing the same and I’m getting my Premier League medals taken away from me, I’d be absolutely devastated.”

Paul Scholes gives his no-nonsense take on Premier League medal debate
On the other hand, former United teammate Paul Scholes has given his take on the idea of receiving a retrospectively awarded Premier League medal.
Taking to his Instagram story on Saturday, he wrote: “Keep hearing ex-teammates saying they want trophies taking off them [City] but don’t want their medals. F*** that, I’m a greedy b****** I want my medal.”

Scholes has yet to give his thoughts on City’s potential punishment after being found guilty of all charges relating to serious breaches of Premier League financial rules.
Rooney, meanwhile, is keen to see a strong reaction from the Premier League. “I’d put them in the lowest league they can go in and then put restrictions on them in terms of how much money they can spend for the next three or four seasons,” he said.
City deny any wrongdoing and are confident of overturning the verdict after they lodged an appeal before Friday’s deadline.
