This is Terminally Online: PC Gamer’s very own MMO column. Every other week, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the genre, interviewing fellow MMO-heads like me, taking a deep-dive into mechanics we’ve all taken for granted, and, occasionally, bringing in guest writers to talk about their MMO of choice.

WoW: Forever’s had me nostalgic for a bygone era of MMOs that seems to be enjoying a touch of a resurgence—the idea of a lived-in immersive world, versus the daily task theme park of modern MMO design. Not that I have anything against the latter, mind. Theme parks are neat and roller coasters are fun.

But I have, true to the point, been grouping up with strangers more often in a slower-burn world, partially for convenience, but also partially because the slower pace has me less hungry for rampant progress and time saving. I’ve gotta hike for six minutes to get to this quest anyway, why wouldn’t I stop and help someone in trouble?

When I get all sappy and soft-hearted like this, I also think of The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, a documentary about a WoW player Mats Steen, who sadly died in 2014 of Duchenne muscular dystrophy—a man whose closest online friends travelled from across the world to attend his funeral.

Steen had a massive impact that I wouldn’t presume to match, but in my 16 years playing MMOs (and roleplaying in them, like some kind of nerd), I’ve also met a lot of people who have changed my life. My first girlfriend, for instance—but I’ve also made a lot of friends who’ve become part of my social makeup, as much as any of my “real” pals.

I won’t name them for privacy’s sake, but one of these people—though I’ve only heard their voice for the better half of a decade we’ve known each other, for reasons I cannot share—has been a constant force of good in my life, and I hers. We’ve pulled each other out of some real mental swamps in the time we’ve known each other, and I’ve even met her sister in the real world through sheer accident.

Hopping from City of Heroes: Homecoming to Final Fantasy 14, we’ve told countless stories together in both MMOs. We know plenty about each other—she knows I write for this very website—but it’s all been in the tiny, cosy window of Discord. It would not be going too far to call this person one of my best friends, and while I have a more regular balance of “real world” mates and digital friendships, the latter ones have never stopped being vital.

Ultimately, the friendships are what make these games—beyond any trick of design, art asset, raid, or loot system—special. As such, I’m carving out this week’s Terminally Online to ask you all about the folks you’ve met in MMOs who’ve changed your life for the better: Please share in the comments below!

Best MMOs: Most massive
Best strategy games: Number crunching
Best open world games: Unlimited exploration
Best survival games: Live craft love
Best horror games: Fight or flight
