John Fury’s accusation that Ben Davison betrayed Tyson by training Anthony Joshua overlooks the professional interests behind their split. Tyson wanted SugarHill Steward involved alongside Davison. That left his existing trainer facing shared authority and potentially different financial terms.

“When people will sell their soul for a fiver … they will do, won’t they? It’s about the money,” John told Playbook Boxing.

“Tyson gave him the biggest leg up in the world and what’s he done now? Traitored [betrayed] him. This is what you’re dealing with, horrible.”

Davison did not leave Tyson’s current camp to prepare Joshua for their December 11 fight in Cardiff. His partnership with Fury ended in December 2019, nearly seven years before this matchup.

In a February 2020 interview with The Telegraph, Tyson explained that he wanted Davison and SugarHill working together. Davison declined and resigned. He agreed that leaving was his decision, describing it as a matter of principle.

Trading top billing for a co-trainer gig represents a demotion in every practical sense. Who would direct preparation, determine tactics, and deliver instructions between rounds? Those were legitimate considerations for a coach whose position was changing.

Money could also have been a consideration, although the proposed terms are unknown. Paying two head trainers full fees could have increased Fury’s costs. Dividing an existing training budget could have reduced Davison’s share.

Add the inevitable friction over who runs the corner, calls tactical adjustments, and commands fighter authority, and staying put meant taking a hit on prestige and earnings. Expecting a rising coach to accept a demotion out of blind loyalty ignores how professional careers function.

John Fury also conveniently forgets his own behavior. Following Tyson’s brutal cut against Otto Wallin, John publicly criticized the entire corner setup, declaring the camp a shambles and demanding wholesale firings. Demanding eternal loyalty now from an employee he wanted sacked then borders on pure theater.

Tyson had every right to switch trainers to overhaul his style. Davison had equal right to protect his professional worth, walk away, and construct an independent stable.

Davison’s deep familiarity with Fury gives Joshua an obvious insider look, even if that knowledge base centers on the fleet-footed version before Steward converted Tyson into an aggressive, front-foot mauler. Deep-seated habits die hard under fire, and Davison knows exactly how Fury reacts when pressurized inside the pocket. Drilling Joshua to exploit those mechanical tells is simple corner strategy. Doing his job for a paying heavyweight does not constitute betrayal.
