Devin Haney is already naming his reward for beating Shakur Stevenson, asking for boxing’s No. 1 pound-for-pound position on X after Shakur publicly accepted a proposed 145-pound catchweight.
“Crown me #1 P4P after this InshaAllah,” Haney posted, quoting Shakur’s message: “145.0 U GOT A DEAL DEEHOE!!!!”
Beating Shakur would give Haney a substantial argument for moving higher. Jumping straight to No. 1 is a bigger request, particularly when the proposed fight would require Shakur to move above the light welterweight limit.
The catchweight is five pounds above 140 and two below the welterweight limit. That puts the contest closer to Haney’s weight territory, making the terms part of any assessment of the result. Haney would deserve credit for solving Shakur’s defense, but the size of the opponent doing it would also need consideration.
Pound-for-pound rankings are subjective, and a victory over an elite opponent does not automatically settle the argument. The performance would count. A narrow decision in a cautious fight would produce a different discussion from Haney controlling the action and repeatedly landing clean shots.
That is where Haney’s declaration creates extra pressure. He has moved beyond promising to win and attached the highest possible ranking to the outcome. If he expects that reward, he would need to deliver a performance that supports it.
Shakur’s acceptance gives the matchup a useful promotional push, although the two posts do not announce a signed contract, venue or confirmed date. His message agrees to 145 pounds without spelling out the rest of the conditions.
There is an appealing technical contest here if the teams finish the deal. Both fighters would have to create openings against an opponent who is difficult to hit cleanly, and winning rounds could depend on who takes the initiative.
Haney can make his case in the ring. Asking for the crown now gives Shakur another reason to make that case fall apart.
