The Declan Rices, William Salibas and David Rayas of this world have been monumental signings for Arsenal over these past seven years, but there can be little doubt that the appointment of Mikel Arteta and his subsequent contract renewals, of which Wednesday marked the latest taking the Spaniard through to at least 2030, have been the club’s most important and impactful deals of a generation.
Arteta has completely overcome the doubts that existed during his early tenure, leaving his critics in his wake and fulfilling the potential the club saw in him when he was offered the head coach role back in 2019. Ending a 22-year wait for a Premier League title and taking the club back to prominence not just in England but in Europe too.
The latter remains the unconquered quest, however, and the Champions League final defeat in 2026 will have unquestionably been only further motivation for an individual whose obsession with the game, with this club and with taking his team to the very top, is unrivalled amongst his peers.

The deal comes following the news that Manchester City had been found guilty of the vast majority of the charges levelled against them by the Premier League. City had been the main antagonists to Arteta’s Arsenal in their hope of ending their wait for the English top-flight crown, and perhaps in a different reality, had the Cityzens operated by the rules in the past decade-plus, things might’ve been very different, and instead Arteta might have multiple titles to his name… who knows?
Equally, it might have been that in this parallel world Arteta never gets a call from Pep Guardiola to join his coaching staff at City, and so the flap of the butterfly’s wings that could determine the course of a man’s career could’ve led him instead down a different path. So there is no need to dwell on the what-could-have-been…
What could still be is an Arsenal team winning back-to-back Premier League titles and, we hope, a Champions League crown, which would, in many people’s minds, put Arteta in a group of one as the club’s best-ever manager. Superseding both Arsene Wenger and Herbert Chapman in the club’s massive and glittering history of success.
It was Chapman’s Arsenal that were the last to win back-to-back league titles, all the way back in the 1930s. It provides a sense of gravity to what the newly-renewed Arteta is hoping to claim.
His achievement at Arsenal is perhaps best appreciated when you look back at the club he inherited. There are others that deserve credit, even despite many critiques of some decisions that were made.
Edu Gaspar spent more than four years alongside Arteta. His squad-builder and the man responsible for getting the deals done. Tim Lewis was another crucial part of the architecture of the club’s rise to prominence before his exit, while Andrea Berta helped put the finishing touches on a side destined to win the league. But the constant throughout has been at the ownership level, and in particular, Josh Kroenke.
Son of the owner Stan Kroenke, Josh has worked closely with Arteta and, during his tenure since 2019, has become more “hands-on” at the club too. No doubt Arteta has helped inspire Josh’s perceived increase in passion for the club, and he has backed his coach, just as Kroenke Sports Entertainment has across their other clubs in their impressive sports portfolio.
This is a big moment for Arteta. The new deal taking him through to 2030 maps out at least four more seasons, including this current one.
Looking back at Jurgen Klopp’s career at Liverpool, a manager, even more so, perhaps looking back with frustration at Manchester City’s involvement in preventing that infamous Liverpool team from achieving more. The German lifted one Premier League and one Champions League, in addition to an FA Cup and two League Cups.
Klopp is considered a Premier League great, no question. These forthcoming seasons, when looking at Arteta and the talent in his squad for both the now and the future, are exciting for Arsenal and daunting for their rivals.
Improvements can still be made. Ask Arteta what the aim is at the start of a season, the answer: 114 points.
Perfection is the aim, reality is always the grounding context, and obsession is the fuel which fans know will keep driving Arteta toward history-making footballing success.
