Tom Selleck could potentially return as Frank Reagan in the Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue. While the new spin-off series has already brought back several familiar faces from the original CBS drama, the show’s creators have now addressed whether Selleck could reprise his iconic role.
Will Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan return in new spin-off?
Following the conclusion of Blue Bloods, CBS launched Boston Blue, a spinoff centered on Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan. Boston Blue has already welcomed several characters from Blue Bloods, but fans are still waiting to see whether Tom Selleck will make an appearance as Frank Reagan.
Speaking in an interview with ScreenRant, showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier have discussed the possibility of bringing Tom Selleck back. Margolis said, “It remains wish fulfillment on our part. We would love to have Tom, and to get to write for Tom would be a dream come true.”
He added they need to find the right story that naturally brings Frank into the world of Boston Blue. “Obviously, it’s always going to come down to what’s the right story to tell, and does it make sense to have Frank there for the character?”
The showrunner described the possibility of having Selleck back as a “dream come true” while acknowledging the actor’s busy schedule. “We’re always trying to think of ways to make that story possible.”
Sonnier shared a similar view. He explained that the writers don’t want to bring Frank Reagan back simply for the sake of having another familiar face. “It’s got to be the right story, though. That’s sort of the thing is we don’t ever want to do it just for the sake of doing it.” He added, “The right story that brings Frank into the world of Boston Blue will present itself, and when it does, it’s going to be an episode of television that we can only dream to write.”
Several Blue Bloods stars have already reprised their roles on Boston Blue. Bridget Moynahan, Marisa Ramirez, Len Cariou, and Will Hochman have all returned as their respective characters. Will Estes is also expected to appear during Season 2. Donnie Wahlberg leads the new series, with Sonequa Martin-Green, Ernie Hudson, and Maggie Lawson, among others, playing key supporting roles.
For now, Frank Reagan’s return remains uncertain. However, the Boston Blue showrunners clearly haven’t ruled it out.
