What is Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz’s Bunker movie about?
A psychological thriller and marriage-crisis drama, Bunker examines the emotional and moral challenges a couple faces in “an increasingly uncertain world.” While Bardem stars as Miguel, a successful London-based Spanish architect, Cruz plays Sofia, a literary/publishing editor.
Miguel starts considering a lucrative, highly secretive contract to build a massive, doomsday survivalist bunker in Hawaii for a tech billionaire. But Sofia strongly opposes the project, viewing it as a symbol of extreme wealth, class disparity, paranoia, and moral detachment from society.
Ultimately, Sofia is left to question their relationship of 17 years as Miguel accepts the offer, with their stable and affluent life together beginning to fracture. Furthermore, the intrusion of an unsettling working-class neighbor, Toby, becomes yet another source of anxiety for the couple.
