“This is the proper fight though. That’s a race to the bank,” Jordan said to talkSPORT Boxing. “Those two boys are getting paid for what they’ve done in the history of the sport, but these two guys are alive and current fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world.”

Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua’s December fight is selling past achievements, while Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley’s rematch offers a stronger contest between current heavyweight forces.

“This is the proper fight though. That’s a race to the bank,” Jordan said to talkSPORT Boxing. “Those two boys are getting paid for what they’ve done in the history of the sport, but these two guys are alive and current fighting for the heavyweight championship of the world.”

Both men look shopworn. From what I can see, Joshua and Furyare operating at somewhere between 45% and 55% of their peak capabilities, and anyone claiming otherwise is looking at old highlight reels rather than what is actually happening in the ring.

Tyson Fury sits around 45% to 50%. The version of Fury that boxed rings around Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 and battered Deontay Wilder in their 2020 rematch relied entirely on exceptional lateral mobility, deceptive feints, and lightning reflexes for a man of his size. That fighter is gone.

The physical toll of the Wilder trilogy, paired with years of dramatic weight fluctuations and long layoffs, stripped away his legs. Against Francis Ngannou, Oleksandr Usyk, and even in his labored outing with Arslanbek Makhmudov, he was flat-footed, vulnerable to overhand rights, and forced into a stationary, mauling style. When a heavyweight whose entire defensive identity depends on slipping and stepping loses half a step, he is simply an oversized target holding on for dear life.

Anthony Joshua appears to be hovering right around 50% to 55%. Mechanically, Joshua still carries genuine power, but his athletic confidence and punch resistance are badly deteriorated. The explosive, fluid combination puncher who climbed off the canvas to stop Klitschko in 2017 vanished after Andy Ruiz scrambled his equilibrium in New York.

The two masterclasses handed to him by Usyk made him profoundly hesitant, and Daniel Dubois exposed the remaining blueprint: push Joshua backward, test his chin under sustained pressure, and his fundamentals collapse into panic. He fights in stiff, robotic spurts, terrified of trading in the pocket because he knows his engine and punch resistance cannot survive extended fire.

Wealth and comfort play an enormous role in that decline. When fighters have nine-figure net worths, private jets, and luxurious estates, the desperate hunger that drove them through brutal 5 AM roadwork and grueling gym wars naturally evaporates.

Soft living does not build the calluses needed to survive against younger, hungry punchers who are still clawing their way to life-changing money. Fury and Joshua are relying on name recognition, veteran survival tricks, and the sheer inertia of past fame to carry them across the finish line.

Dubois and Wardley represent the complete opposite side of the coin. Dubois went through the fire against Joe Joyce and Usyk, took the criticism, adjusted, and proceeded to batter Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic, and Joshua himself. Wardley came up through the unlicensed circuit, took brutal lumps against Frazer Clarke, and proved he will stand in the pocket and trade until somebody falls.

Their first fight produced actual drama, heavy leather, and genuine consequences. They are active, dangerous, and willing to risk their position in the division rather than coasting on reputation. Dubois and Wardley belong at the top table because they earn it in the ring against live bodies, while Fury and Joshua are simply collecting one final, bloated pension payout before walking away.
