Canelo Alvarez wants another shot at Terence Crawford, although getting the retired fighter back into the ring could require a Saudi offer large enough to make him risk the victory he already owns.

Canelo expressed hope for a rematch and pointed to his history of improving the second time around.

“I always do good in the rematch. So, I hope that fight happens again,” said Canelo to Ring Magazine.

The Mexican star has watched his defeat to Crawford about five times and believes it was close. Following elbow surgery, he says he can now throw his left hand the way he wants. His argument is that fighting Crawford required him to be fully healthy, and he wasn’t.

That gives Canelo a personal reason to pursue another fight. The case for spending heavily to bring Crawford out of retirement is harder to make.

Crawford’s cautious approach delivered the victory, but the first fight offered little sustained action. For viewers who found it tedious, another expensive event featuring the same pairing needs more than Canelo promising a better performance.

The interviewer referenced Turki Alalshikh’s interest in a rematch. Interest, however, leaves the price unresolved. How much would Crawford require, and how much would the Saudis be willing to invest in repeating that experience?

Crawford’s inactivity doesn’t strengthen the entertainment argument. Talking on X and appearing at boxing events keeps him visible, but it gives audiences no new performance to get excited about. His win over Canelo remains the selling point. A rematch would be asking that same result to sell another event.

“If not, I wish him the best,” Canelo said about Crawford returning.

Canelo first faces Christian Mbilli on October 31. His performance there can help build interest in another Crawford fight, particularly if he shows that his restored left hand changes his offense.

Crawford has less sporting incentive to return. He already has the win. Canelo wants the chance to reverse it, leaving the Saudis to decide whether that unfinished business is worth Crawford’s asking price.

The odds of Crawford giving Canelo a return bout are slim to none. Crawford already pocketed an enormous payday, walked away with all four belts at 168, and proved his technical superiority without absorbing damage. He holds every trump card. If he even entertains stepping out of retirement, his asking price will start north of $50 million, and there is zero financial logic for Saudi backers to meet that demand.

Crawford fought a cautious, risk-averse fight that produced long stretches of silence. The general public has no interest in buying that replay. If Saudi money gets spent to put Canelo in the ring, names like David Benavidez or Jaron Ennis bring far more violent intent, fan demand, and genuine entertainment value for the dollars invested. Crawford simply does not move the needle enough to justify another massive outlay.

All of that becomes completely irrelevant anyway if Christian Mbilli does what he is built to do on October 31. Canelo’s odometer is flashing red. Putting an aging fighter with heavy ring wear in front of a relentless, high-volume pressure puncher like Mbilli is asking for disaster.

Canelo’s legs cannot keep him out of danger for twelve rounds anymore, and relying on low-output counterpunching against a guy throwing eighty punches a round usually ends with the older guy getting worn down and stopped. If Mbilli rolls through him on Halloween, Crawford will not even have to answer the phone, because Canelo’s leverage vanishes for good.
