As the war between the United States and Iran has escalated throughout 2026, one thing has become apparent, and it’s that the U.S. needs to purchase and deploy more Patriot Air Defense Systems and their Interceptor missiles. The highly capable and battle-tested missiles are used to shoot down incoming missiles and other threats, and like most complex modern munitions, it takes a lot of time and money to produce them.
Cost is always an important factor in arms procurement, and Patriot Interceptors aren’t inexpensive or easy to manufacture. That’s one of the main reasons that there’s a shortage in the inventory, though the rise in ongoing conflicts has certainly taken its toll. Ukraine has been using them to counter Russian threats during the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War, so shortages of Patriot Interceptors abound.
The Patriot PAC-3 MSE missile isn’t purchased in one-off contracts, and is instead purchased in bulk from the manufacturer, Lockheed Martin. In 2026, the DoD procured 232, which was only two more than in previous years. However, it takes a long time for each missile to roll off the assembly line, find its way to a unit, and take its place inside a launcher. Still, a complete Patriot Missile System battery costs between $560 million and $1+ billion, so the overall cost is high.
The cost and time needed to produce a single PAC-3 MSE Patriot Interceptor Missile
There are many powerful military air defense systems, and PAC-3 MSE Patriot missiles are some of the most advanced interceptors ever made, proving their worth in numerous defensive operations for years. Because it’s so complex, it takes 24 months to produce a single missile, though thankfully, Lockheed Martin doesn’t produce one at a time. Still, a single batch of PAC-3 missiles takes two years from start to finish just to produce them, not to mention the cost. Around 400 companies are involved in their production, as PAC-3 MSE missiles are packed with components.
It’s the expertly crafted components that enable the missile to be fired from a launcher, acquire a target moving at incredible speed, and make adjustments as needed, and it takes a lot of time and people to make what’s needed to get the job done. Everything from the Solid Rocket Motor to the Guidance Processor Unit and Missile Radio Frequency Data Link is integral to the missile’s success, and none of it is cheap or easy to manufacture.
For these reasons, it’s a logistical challenge to produce PAC-3 MSE missiles abroad in places like Ukraine, which is an idea that’s been floated from time to time. While it’s unclear what each component costs during the manufacturing process, the total cost per missile is around $3.7 million, though some sources online suggest the cost is higher at $4.2 million or even $5 million. That said, Lockheed Martin is working on a new version that’s going to cost half as much as the current model.
