BMC Ecology and Evolution

Scientists in China have described a clutch of dinosaur eggs holding identifiable hadrosauroid embryos, among them a remarkably well-preserved specimen nicknamed the “Ying Baby.” The find, reported on May 8, 2022, comes from Jiangxi province and could help fill long-standing gaps in what we know about how dinosaurs developed.

Dinosaur eggs turn up all over the world, but ones that still carry embryos are extremely uncommon. That scarcity has seriously limited our understanding of dinosaur development, which is one reason so many questions remain open for paleontologists.

The new fossils, then, arrive at a useful moment. They were found in southern China, and they belong to a group of giant herbivores that lived toward the end of the dinosaur epoch.

A Discovery Made During Construction Blasting

The discovery happened in Jiangxi Province, southern China, where workers were blasting rock for a construction project in the Ganzhou Basin. Hidden inside the ancient red rocks of the Hekou Formation was a clutch of dinosaur eggs dating to the Upper Cretaceous period. But these weren’t just ordinary fossilized eggs.

The study published in BMC Ecology and Evolution describes at least two roughly spherical eggs containing identifiable embryos belonging to the hadrosauroid group, which includes duck-billed dinosaurs.

“At least two of the eggs contain identifiable hadrosauroid embryos, described here for the first time,” the researchers wrote.

Finding embryos in dinosaur eggs is unusual because most don’t survive long enough to become fossils. Their remains generally disappear inside the eggshell, leaving scientists with little evidence of what the animals looked like before hatching.

Meet the “Ying Baby”

Based on its characteristics, the team believes the best-preserved fossil belongs to the hadrosaurus group, better known as the duck-billed dinosaurs. According to Xinhua, it is not the first time such an embryo has been found, but the Ying Baby is by far the best-preserved one yet.

The specimen is currently held at the Yingliang Stone Natural History Museum in Fujian Province, in East China, which gave it its nickname. The egg itself is an ellipsoid with a diameter of around 9 centimeters.

That modest size matters. As mentioned in the study, the tiny dimensions of both the egg and the embryo suggest that duck-billed dinosaurs had small eggs and late body development as a primordial feature. It is one of the most important new pieces of information the discovery adds to the picture of dinosaur growth.

Part of a Growing Collection of Embryo Fossils

This isn’t the team’s first embryo discovery. Back in December 2021, the same group uncovered a branch of embryo fossils that included an oviraptorosaur embryo. Finds like these are incredibly rare, since most embryos fade away inside their eggshells.

As researchers examine the fossils further, they could provide valuable information on the reproductive development, behavior, evolution, and paleoecology of dinosaurs, which became extinct around 66 million years ago.

There is plenty left to learn, too. With more than 700 recognized extinct dinosaur species, as Interesting Engineering notes, there is still much to uncover.
