Brandon Figueroa lost his WBA featherweight title on the scale Friday, coming in 1.4 pounds over the limit ahead of his scheduled bout with Tomoki Kameda in Las Vegas.

Figueroa weighed in at 127.4 pounds for the 126-pound contest. Kameda made weight successfully, meaning only Kameda can claim the championship on Saturday night. A victory by Figueroa leaves the title vacant.

That turns Figueroa from a defending champion into an unseated titleholder trying to save face on the Sebastian Fundora versus Alban Hadribeaj undercard. Even an emphatic victory cannot win back the belt he surrendered before entering the ring.

The Inoue lottery ticket required holding that WBA strap. “The Monster” and Top Rank are not looking to build up contenders out of goodwill; they want hardware to legitimize multi-division conquest, or they want unifications. Without that belt, Figueroa brings zero leverage and zero mandatory status. Inoue’s team can easily look right past him to someone who actually holds a title, like Rafael Espinoza, or pivot to cleaner in-house business. Figueroa basically tossed an eight-figure lottery ticket into the incinerator for a pound and a half.

Now he is in no-man’s-land. If his body is completely done making 126, forcing a climb to 130 is fraught with danger. Figueroa is not a one-punch equalizer artist who carries dynamite up the scale. His entire identity relies on being an attritional nightmare: absorbing punishment to deliver twice as much in return, mauling guys on the inside, and physically grinding them down over twelve rounds.

At super featherweight, the guys he will stand chest-to-chest with hit harder, absorb pressure better, and carry genuine natural frame advantages. If his power does not earn their respect early, Figueroa goes from being the hunter to a walking heavy bag taking brutal wear and tear.

He threw away the champion’s luxury of calling shots. Now he either has to starve himself to salvage a contender spot at 126 or step directly into the meat grinder at 130 with no leverage and no guarantees.

Questions about his camp surfaced quickly. Chris Mannix reported on X that Figueroa dealt with a hamstring injury in preparation for the bout. While the severity of the injury remains unspecified, the setback could explain missed conditioning time for a fighter reliant on relentless forward pressure and durable legs. Kameda now has an opening to exploit any mobility issues, control distance, and frustrate Figueroa from the outside.

The bout itself still promises action, but Figueroa enters the ring with ground to make up. Saturday night is no longer a title defense; it is damage control.
