Pokémon now has its own Wordle alternative where the infamous trainer Red challenges you to a battle every single day.
It feels like everyone has been hooked on Wordle at some point in their lives, and many are still well within its grip.
The New York Times game has since inspired fans to create their own version of the daily word-guessing game, but with a Pokémon twist.
One example was posted to Instagram by amoi.builds. It’s called Pokémon Daily Red, and as the name implies, it challenges you to fight Red every single day, though each day is different.
Red is who you play as in the Gen 1 games, but he makes a return as the final boss in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal. He’s a tough opponent and has become as famous as Ash Ketchum in the franchise.
The idea behind Pokémon Daily Red is to give you a randomised team to fight against his preset team. Every Pokémon is Level 100, which you’d think would put you in good stead, but as any competitive Pokémon fan will know, the level is practically irrelevant if your team lacks synergy.
That’s where the challenge comes from in this fan game. The video example by amoi.builds involved a team composed of Vaporeon, Marowak, Mudkip, Grovyle, Slaking and Alakazam. We’ve seen worse line-ups, but it’s far from ideal. Red’s team is always the same: Pikachu, Espeon, Snorlax, Venosaur, Blastoise and Charizard.
“Had this idea for months and finally got around to it”, said amoi.builds in the video’s description.
The game will record your wins and losses after each encounter and it’ll even keep track of your longest win streak.
How to play Pokémon Daily Red yourself
Now amoi.build’s take on the game isn’t currently playable online, but there are others who’ve had the same idea.
Daily-red.com is the exact same idea and runs in your browser like any other online game.
It’ll tell you what team has been formed today and let you choose the order in which they’ll appear. At the time of writing, the team is Donphan, Metagross, Houndoom, Gyarados, Alakazam and Ludicolo. Now that’s a good team.
Like Wordle, you only get one chance per day, so if you mess up and all of your Pokémon faint, you’ll have to wait until the following day to try again.
I had a go at it myself as I was writing this article and it’s as fun as it sounds. It’s definitely one I’ll be coming back to each day, especially if it works just as well on your mobile phone.
The only thing that sort of worries me is how long this fan-made game will remain online. The Pokémon Company is quite protective of its IP, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the site struck down in the next few weeks. Hopefully not, though, as it’s completely free and isn’t hurting anyone.
