Erling Haaland’s double helped Manchester City extend their perfect start to the Premier League season to eight matches and Ipswich Town’s two-match winning run ended at the Etihad Stadium.
The restored Phil Foden struck from Jeremy Doku’s delivery to put City ahead, only for Ipswich to equalise when Daizen Maeda raced inside the box and beat Gianluigi Donnarumma in clinical fashion as part of an incisive move.
Haaland headed in Mateo Kovacic’s cross via grounded goalkeeper Christian Walton to restore City’s lead at half-time and produced a composed touch and finish from Iliman Ndiaye’s pass to add to their advantage during the second period.
A Video Assistant Referee offside decision denied Haaland a third when the Norway striker fired in seconds after Ndiaye hit the crossbar, with Zian Flemming then converting a penalty for a foul by Marc Guehi on Abdul Fatawu.
Manchester City vs Ipswich: Haaland goal ‘not normal’
Ipswich, who began on nine points after successive wins away to Crystal Palace and at home to Fulham, produced another impressive display, equalising courtesy of a swift counter-attack and setting up a suspenseful finish during 12 minutes of second-half added time.
The Tractor Boys, who had Walton to thank for several excellent saves, were unfortunate to encounter a striker in exceptional form, with Haaland scoring in a sixth consecutive Premier League appearances game for his best such run since a run of seven games between August and October 2022.
“Ndiaye does well to set up Haaland,” former Ireland forward Clinton Morrison told Sky Sports of City’s third goal.
“This guy [Haaland] is not normal as he says to [Abdoul] Ouattara ‘Get off me’ and rolls it into the bottom corner.”
The Cityzens suffered their first defeat of the season in all competitions with a 4-2 home loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday.
