Cloud9 were knocked out of the Worlds 2026 Play-In by FURIA on Friday, losing their lower-bracket series 3-1 and becoming the tournament’s first eliminated team. Support Philippe “Vulcan” Laflamme gave a particularly severe assessment of the squad after the defeat, calling Cloud9 pathetic, according to Sheep Esports.
The result ended Cloud9’s Worlds campaign while keeping FURIA alive after the Brazilian side had opened its tournament with a 0-3 loss to MVK Esports. Cloud9 took the first game of the elimination series, but FURIA won the next three to complete the comeback.
The Play-In leaves little room for a stumble: teams still have to earn their way into the Swiss Stage through the Worlds 2026 Play-In format. For Cloud9, that route is now closed; for FURIA, the 3-1 win bought another shot.
FURIA turned an early win into an exit
Cloud9 had briefly made history of its own: after taking Game 1, the team posted that it had secured its first game win against FURIA in League of Legends esports. The Brazilian side answered with three straight victories, extending its winning streak over Cloud9 after a 3-0 result at the Americas Cup in March.
FURIA botlaner Andrey “Ayu” Saraiva was named series MVP, finishing with an 18/6/19 KDA. It was a strong individual line in a series where the larger story was the reversal: Cloud9 got the opening win, but could not turn it into a match victory.
Rivera accepts responsibility after elimination
Cloud9 head coach Christian “IWillDominate” Rivera took responsibility for what he described as the team’s fragility. He said he had not created the conditions for the squad to recover from its previous day’s defeat, and identified the team’s low baseline as a key gap between Cloud9 and stronger opponents.
Botlaner Edward “Tactical” Ra also expressed disappointment, describing the series as a poor way to end Cloud9’s Worlds run and year. Together with Vulcan’s blunt judgment, the reactions left little attempt to dress up the result as anything other than a failure to deliver.
FURIA’s next series keeps Swiss hopes alive
FURIA was set to face MVK Esports again in the next series, with a place in the Swiss Stage still up for grabs. The winner would meet Karmine Corp for that qualification spot, while the loser would be eliminated from the tournament.
