The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered

A fan patch has dramatically improved the performance of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, massively increasing the average framerate of the game.

As one of the most popular RPGs of the 2000s, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion‘s remaster was welcomed with open arms when it was released last year.

However, while fans loved the new art direction, bug fixes, and quality of life improvements, they were less pleased with the performance of the remaster, especially on PC.

The console version of the game targeted 60fps, but rarely hit this exact number in most areas. In most open areas, performance could dip to 30 FPS and below. Caves and interiors were able to fare better due to them not needing to render as many objects on screen at once, but it’s a jarring experience to move between areas and have your performance tank.

For those who have put their Cyrodiil adventure on hold until performance is fixed, a new fan patch may be the solution.

Oblivion Remastered‘s performance has finally been improved in a new fan patch

Posting on the Oblivion Reddit page, user LTSharpe was able to identify around 40 issues with the game, implementing fixes which target improved performance and less stuttering during gameplay.

“All open-sourced and available for the community to benefit. Not AI slop but two weeks of dedicated hard work and testing, to bring our favorite game the performance it deserves,” LTSharpe adds.

They shared a video benchmarking the game in two separate instances: one with the patch installed, and one without.

Flying over the Imperial City and surrounding river areas (which is where performance is hit the most in the standard version), the framerate of the game without mods drops to the mid-30s on average, with 1% lows of 18.2 FPS. With the mod installed though, this number rises to an average of 51 FPS and 1% lows of 26. Still not perfect, but a lot better than before.

The number of stutters have also been dramatically reduced, dropping from 66 stutters during the two-minute benchmark to just 11.

Some of the fixes they point to include reducing the massive CPU load that comes with calculating light, and parallelising operations which were previously running on a single thread.

Altogether, it might not a perfect solution, but the framerate hovers much closer to 60 FPS now, making this a much smoother experience for those who want to play with higher frames.

It sounds like LTSharpe isn’t finished with the fix though, and has alluded to looking into other issues with the remaster once they’re done with the performance improvements. So this might be a good project to keep an eye on in case more fixes come in future updates.

For now, this should make The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered better for players with lower-end hardware, and be a good thing to tide us over until The Elder Scrolls VI releases, whenever that will be.
