Robert Garcia thinks Naoya Inoue is merely posturing by announcing preparations for featherweight. Yet, the trainer might be completely misjudging a champion who simply got tired of waiting around for Jesse’Bam’ Rodriguez.

Garcia recently altered his tune, putting March on the table instead of his original April or May window. He sounds certain that a clash can still happen, yet nothing Inoue posted indicates an interest in pausing his jump to 126 pounds.

“If Inoue and his team are really willing to do it, all we need is a phone call, and we’ll work it out,” Garcia told The Ring. “I think Inoue is just playing it smart. I don’t think he’s backing out of the fight.”

Garcia desperately needs that reading to prove true. His earlier proposal assumed Inoue would hold tight while Rodriguez took another bantamweight bout before moving up. Inoue answered immediately by kicking off his featherweight readiness. Garcia clearly miscalculated how badly that timetable would land.

“All he needs to do is tell his management team and promoter to get a hold of us, and we’ll make a deal,” Garcia said. “That’s not a problem. We will make a deal for March.”

Meanwhile, Rodriguez is penciled in to meet Christian Medina in December, eyeing dates around December 11 or December 19. That schedule creates a brutal turnaround heading into March, banking on Bam escaping completely unscathed to start another camp.

The real problem is whether Garcia spoke up too late. Shifting the date to March fixes the timeline on paper, but it won’t force Inoue to shelve his move upward. Garcia might think Inoue’s bluffing. In reality, the trainer could just be scrambling after fumbling the negotiation. If Inoue meant every word about moving on, March is an offer arriving after the ship has already sailed.

His public optimism feels less like an accurate reading of Inoue and more like a trainer trying to control the damage after grossly overplaying his hand.

When Garcia floated April or May just so Rodriguez could squeeze in a December unification bout with Christian Medina, he made the fundamental mistake of treating Inoue like a B-side who would happily sit idle and put his body through additional months at 122 pounds just to accommodate Bam’s developmental timeline.

Garcia admitted that he wanted the Medina fight so Bam Rodriguez could feel punches at 118 and get accustomed to taking heavy shots from a bigger man before stepping in with a pound-for-pound puncher. That tells you everything. Team Garcia wanted their cake and to eat it too: collect another bantamweight belt in December, build confidence, and make Inoue wait until late spring.

Inoue calling their bluff by openly preparing for 126 pounds was the predictable response from a fighter who values activity and historic legacy over playing waiting games. Garcia suddenly pivoting to March is a panic move.

Turning around three months after a tough December bout is unrealistic for Rodriguez anyway, and it completely ignores the fact that Inoue has likely closed the door. Garcia mistook Inoue’s patience for dependence, and now he is trying to convince the boxing public that the phone call he wants is still going to come.
