Victor Wembanyama has found himself at the center of a political dispute in France after publicly supporting student demonstrations over school conditions and educational inequality.
The San Antonio Spurs star first voiced his support earlier this month after a fan invited him on Instagram to join protesting students. Wembanyama replied that he “would love to,” then expanded on his position during a postgame press conference, saying the movement touched him because he had attended school in Nanterre and was familiar with student blockades and disparities in the French education system.
“These are systemic inequalities, problems that are so deep,” Wembanyama said.
He added that he was happy young people were making themselves heard and expressed hope that those in positions of power would listen to them.
“I’m glad that high school students, young people in general, are making their voices heard, because I hear them and I support them. And I hope the people at the very top will do the same.”
The protests initially focused on issues including teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, deteriorating facilities and wider inequality between schools. The movement later expanded nationally, and some demonstrations were accompanied by violence, vandalism and clashes with police.
French politician Éric Ciotti now criticized Wembanyama following a separate social-media post.
Wembanyama had published an image of the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland pointing toward a watch, without any accompanying political message. Ciotti interpreted the image as encouragement for demonstrations taking place on October 17 and subsequently accused Wembanyama and other public figures of supporting the unrest.
Ciotti wrote that celebrities who had encouraged the October 17 unrest carried a “historic responsibility” and should be condemned.

Wembanyama has increasingly shown a willingness to speak publicly about issues beyond basketball. His comments on the student movement were framed through his own experience growing up around Paris, with the 22-year-old saying that his current circumstances have not made him forget problems he saw firsthand as a student.
