Traces of nearly 600 wooden items have been recovered at a Neanderthal site in Spain, suggesting this extinct hominin was as comfortable with carpentry as with knapping. The imprints, preserved as mineral casts, reveal a side of Neanderthal life that almost never survives.

We call it the Stone Age because stone tools are what tend to turn up at the sites of that period. Yet humans more than 40,000 years ago clearly had more in their toolkits than stone alone, and Neanderthals and other ancient humans were probably just as familiar with making tools from wood.

The trouble is that wood decomposes, so it rarely lasts long enough for archaeologists to find it. That is why Abric Romaní, a site in Barcelona where wooden tools left their mark in mineral deposits, matters so much. A study published in the journal Science Advances now sets out what the researchers found there.

A Site Where Wood Left Its Mark

At Abric Romaní, wooden objects crafted by Neanderthals became encrusted in calcium carbonate. As the tools rotted away, they left remarkably detailed imprints in the mineral deposits. Researchers have now analyzed 597 wooden imprints and remains at the site.

According to study author Dr Palmira Saladié of the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution, the site also holds hearths, stone tools and the animals Neanderthals processed. Bringing all of it together, she said, lets researchers understand not only what Neanderthals were doing but how they organised their living spaces, managed fire and other resources, and carried out everyday activities.

Spears, Poles and Bark Containers

Among the remains, the team identified 13 examples of wooden technologies, including tools, weapons, domestic utensils and structural elements. These objects date to between 62,000 and 40,000 years ago, and they point to woodworking as an integral part of Neanderthal behavior and survival strategies.

Most of the collection was made of Scots pine. It includes two hunting spears, measuring 1.99 meters and 2.45 meters (6.5 feet and 8 feet) in length. There are also crossed wooden poles that may have served as a tripod for cooking over a fire. A 5.1-metre-long (16.7-foot-long) wooden piece may have been a structural component of a living space, and the researchers also found containers and trays made of bark.

One Object Unlike Any Other

Perhaps the oddest find is a wooden item with a handle and an enlarged head, unlike any other artifact in the prehistoric record. Saladié told IFLScience that:

“It could have been used as a hammer or striking tool, as a secondary weapon for hunting, or in interpersonal violence,” adding that: “We could even consider a symbolic role, perhaps as an object indicating someone’s status within the group. These are possibilities, however, rather than uses we can demonstrate.”

She was careful, however, to stress that these are possibilities rather than uses the team can demonstrate. In other words, what the object was actually for remains an open question. Summing up the significance of the work, Saladié said Abric Romaní gives reason to think wooden technology was important, diverse and flexible, adapted to people’s needs from hunting to preparing food. She called that:

“That practical versatility and adaptability are qualities we can readily recognise in ourselves. It gives us a fuller picture of Neanderthal technology, a large part of which is usually missing from the archaeological record.”
