The Star Wars Battlefront series is allegedly making a comeback again, and the ex-Halo studio is reportedly in talks to bring it back.
Star Wars Battlefront II (2018) killed post-launch support far too soon. Despite an abysmal launch, the game had so much life in it, and there was so much left for it to do.
Unfortunately, Electronic Arts disagreed, and while you can still play the game today, you’d be relying on mods for new content.
Now it seems like EA has had a change of heart, as rumour has it either DICE or Bungie are being considered to develop Star Wars Battlefront 3. We know which one we’d prefer…
Destiny devs making Star Wars Battlefront 3 sounds like a disaster waiting to happen
After leaving Halo behind, Bungie moved on to greener pastures with Destiny. The story unfortunately lacks a happy ending, though, as recently gamers revolted against the company for cutting support for Destiny 2. The live-service FPS received support for many years through many expansions, but Bungie’s finally keen to move on.
While I’ll always have a fondness for Bungie for creating one of my favourite video game franchises of all time, the idea of it making the next Star Wars Battlefront game scares me.
Star Wars Battlefront is defined by its large-scale conflicts and the chaos that ensues. Even if you’re not particularly good at the game, you can still have a great time and rack up the kills.
That’s not the case for Destiny, though. Those games are skill-driven and competitive. Your build matters, and the PvP has never gone beyond 12 players at once. It’d be an enormous leap for the studio.
DICE isn’t perfect either, by the way. Its execution of the Battlefront series hasn’t been flawless, but it’s been enough to propel the series in popularity. The second game still gets a huge spike in players whenever something big happens in the Star Wars fanbase.
Out of the two studios, DICE is better equipped to deliver a new Star Wars Battlefront game. Goodwill for Bungie has unfortunately dried up, and most fans will tell you the studio feels like a shell of its former self.

Bungie shouldn’t make Star Wars Battlefront 3; there’s a better option
With Electronic Arts keen to get more and more Star Wars games out into the world, there’s plenty of room for developers to take a crack at the IP.
I’d hate to see Bungie make a Star Wars Battlefront game, but I’d be keen to see it take on a title like Star Wars: Republic Commando 2.
A narrative-driven first-person shooter would be more Bungie’s speed. Whether it be a new Republic Commando game or something entirely new.
We’ve seen what it can do with a refined first-person shooter and a sci-fi universe, and I’m confident that with the right team it could do the same for Star Wars. It’ll probably never happen, but it’s a good idea.
As for Star Wars Battlefront 3 takes the rumours with a pinch of salt until EA confirms or denies them.
That said, if it does turn out to be true, pray DICE is the studio that gets the game. Its track record has proven that, with enough support and the right budget, it can make a truly exceptional Battlefront game.
