The Los Angeles Clippers took the court at Intuit Dome on Wednesday without one of their biggest fans cheering them on. That would be team owner Steve Ballmer, who is suspended for the entire season over violating NBA salary cap rules.
Ballmer may not have been able to attend the contest — which the Clippers won 121-96 over the Sacramento Kings — in person, but he was there in spirit. After the game, Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue opened his presser by dedicating the win to Ballmer.
“First off, that win was for Mr. Ballmer,” Lue said. “Just want to say thank you for everything and we’re still fighting for him.”
Ballmer was suspended as part of the NBA investigation into the Kawhi Leonard signing. The team and owner were accused of paying Leonard additional funds through “no-show jobs” as a way to circumvent the NBA salary cap.
The league launched an investigation into the situation after journalist Pablo Torre unveiled the plot on his podcast. After months of investigating, the NBA came down hard on Ballmer and the Clippers, docking the team five future first-round draft picks, fining Ballmer $30 million and suspending him for a year. As part of his suspension, Ballmer is banned “from all league and team activities for one year.”
Lue wasn’t the only member of the Clippers to pay tribute to Ballmer after the win. Darius Garland, who led the Clippers with 30 points, said Ballmer was “definitely here in spirit.”
After an eventful offseason, one in which the team traded Leonard away, the Clippers face low expectations this season. If Wednesday is any indication, though, the team will use the Ballmer situation as a motivating tactic all year.
Because of that, it’s unlikely that narrative will go away anytime soon. If the Clippers can exceed expectations and make a run, you can bet Ballmer’s name will continue to be invoked all season.
