Khamzat Chimaev is laser focused on getting a rematch with Sean Strickland.
Chimaev and Strickland fought at UFC 328 back in May, with Strickland defeating a seemingly depleted “Borz” via split decision (48-47, 48-47, 47-48). It was not the best fight. After weeks of threatening to murder each other outside the cage, there was a whole lot of nothing going on inside of it.
And then both guys hugged afterwards and Strickland admitted their whole feud was made up to sell wolf tickets. You can do that once and good for you, but trying to sell the whole thing again immediately after isn’t going to work. So Chimaev’s recent words from Real American Freestyle 14 in Las Vegas kind of ring hollow.
“We will make the matchup, don’t worry,” Chimaev declared. “Light heavyweight, heavyweight, wherever he goes, we go after him. But yeah, I’m the hunter. He’s a chicken running away. If he goes [to heavyweight] I go up.”
More accurately, Strickland is the champion and Chimaev is not the champion. Chimaev is the one with a loss on his record, and until he gets back in the UFC cage and wins a fight in dominant fashion, we doubt there’s another title shot to be had.
Chimaev has said he wants to turn around quickly and fight again, but you’ll never see a fighter competing at RAF when they have a bout lined up. So is it all talk? Chimaev used to be very active, but hasn’t fought more than once in a year since 2022. If he’s really the hunter, let’s see him bag some other chickens. Until then, it’s just more talk.
