Cain Velasquez is speaking in detail about the 2022 shooting and 11-mile vehicle chase that ultimately sent him to prison.
The former two-time Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight champion appeared on the latest three-hour episode of The Shawn Ryan Show, where he recounted learning that his then-four-year-old son had allegedly been sexually abused at a daycare.
“My son [told] me things that were happening to him at his daycare,” Velasquez said. “I ask questions about what happened. I ask him how long it’s been going on, [and he] says for a while. So, we do what we’re supposed to do. We make a report [and] call the authorities.”
Harry Goularte was arrested in February 2022 and charged with one felony count of lewd acts with a child under 14. Goularte, a relative of the daycare’s owner, pleaded not guilty and has denied any wrongdoing. His criminal case remained in the pre-trial phase as of Velasquez’s release.
Goularte was released under court supervision two days after his arrest. Velasquez said watching his son and wife process the allegations left him feeling helpless.
“Seeing my son and seeing all the trauma now come out — seeing the hurt in him, breaking down, crying — [and] seeing my wife Michelle break down, that hurt me, brother,” Velasquez said. “That was one of the hardest things, if not the hardest thing, to watch them go through their hurt in the moment and not be able to do anything.”
Several days later, Velasquez said he took his son to the zoo in an attempt to provide a break from the situation. After returning home, he went for a drive and unexpectedly spotted members of Goularte’s family.
“I’d never seen him out in public ever, right? Well, that day I saw them. I saw them,” Velasquez said. “I had a conversation with God again. Well, I said, ‘God, you know what I’m doing. So, you make this however you want. You make this outcome however you want to make it, but you know what I’m doing.’”
Velasquez followed their vehicle as they went to pick up Goularte, who was scheduled to receive an electronic monitoring device.
“I followed them, and they went right to pick up Harry, go take him, and go get his ankle monitor, and I lost it,” Velasquez said. “Whatever you would say having it is. I lost it. I f—king lost the will to live. I didn’t care about dying. Didn’t care. Didn’t care about anything. I was in a different place at that moment. I wasn’t maneuvering within the parameters of what we call normal life. I wasn’t something else. So I did what I did.”
Velasquez pursued the vehicle for approximately 11 miles, rammed it with his truck and fired multiple rounds from a .40-caliber handgun. Goularte was not struck, but his stepfather, Paul Bender, suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Velasquez said he considered everyone inside the vehicle responsible for what happened at the daycare, although Goularte was the only occupant criminally charged in connection with the alleged abuse.
“All of them could have got it,” Velasquez said. “Look at the photos now from the crime scene. Their truck was shot up. I only hit the stepfather. I hit him in the arm. It could have been much worse, but it wasn’t.
“There was traffic, so innocent people [could have gotten] hit. I was trying not to, but I wasn’t here. I understand it could have hurt a lot of people who weren’t even involved.”
Velasquez was arrested after the chase and later pleaded no contest to attempted murder, felony assault and several firearm-related charges. He was sentenced to five years in prison in March 2025, receiving credit for time previously served.
The 44-year-old was released from prison in February 2026 after completing his sentence as defined by California law. He remains on parole.
