Ukraine-Russia war: US says grain shortages ‘threatening the world’ in calls for Black Sea ceasefire

Authorities in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region are taking all necessary measures to ensure fuel remains available at petrol stations following a suspected Ukrainian drone attack that damaged an industrial ‌facility in the ‌region.

Russian investigators opened a criminal case on terrorism charges over the attack on the industrial facility and civilian infrastructure in the Nizhny Novgorod region, governor Gleb Nikitin said.

In a post on Telegram, Nikitin said the “massive” unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attack resulted in “significant damage” to the facility.

“More than 100 drones have been destroyed,” he wrote. The region is home to the NORSI oil refinery, one of Russia’s largest.

The targeted facility was not named but Ukrainian media reported that a large fire broke out at the Kstovo oil refinery in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, and local residents reported explosions.

Zelensky says Russia struck power infrastructure in four Ukrainian regions. He said Ukraine, meanwhile, had hit the Kamensky plant in Russia’s Rostov region, which he said was involved in the manufacture of Russian missiles.

Earlier, the US warned grain and energy shortages are “threatening the world” as it said there is growing international interest in facilitating a temporary ceasefire in the Black Sea.

US warns Russia about ‘mass casualty event’ plot to attack Moscow

In an urgent security alert issued on Saturday, the US Embassy named the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve as the specific target of the planned attack, advising all American nationals in the Russian capital to avoid the site and stay clear of large crowds.

The museum was established in 1775 and after a restoration in the 1980s has remained a popular tourist destination in the city.

Ukrainian arms maker Fire Point says its systems can complete missions without SpaceX

Ukrainian arms manufacturer Fire Point has found ways to carry out long-range strikes in Russia and occupied areas of Ukraine without relying on SpaceX satellite services, its chief executive told Reuters.

CEO Iryna Terekh also ‌said a new tactical ballistic missile developed by Fire Point could help boost the protection of Ukrainian cities, which have been pounded by Russian forces as Ukraine’s air defences run low.

Ukraine’s military relies heavily on Elon Musk’s SpaceX for satellite communications over its territory and Kyiv has asked the company to extend coverage over Russia.

But for 10 days this month, Ukraine faced speed limits on its use of SpaceX services, which hampered drone defences and mid-strike missions.

Terekh, 34, said the company had found workarounds that allowed it to finish strike missions without using a satellite link.

“We have built with this in mind. Fire Point systems are designed to finish a mission without a satellite link,” she said, discussing the recent SpaceX restrictions.

“Navigation that works without any external signal is a priority.”

Key questions around the Russian and Ukrainian evacuation of Oleshky

Residents of the Russian-held town of Oleshky in southern Ukraine began evacuating on Friday as part of a joint relief operation by the two sides, the first of its kind in four years and eight months of war.

Many questions have been asked about the humanitarian operation and its wider significance under a deal that US first lady Melania Trump was involved in brokering, with the additional involvement of Pope Leo.

WHAT DO RUSSIA AND UKRAINE WANT FROM THE OPERATION?

Besides the safe evacuation of many of Oleshky’s ‌residents, Moscow and Kyiv are trying to use the operation to show US President Donald Trump they are serious about his efforts to secure an overall peace settlement.

Neither side wants to be blamed by Trump for something going wrong in Oleshky, an event that could burnish his self-professed credentials as a peacemaker before US midterm legislative elections.

Zelensky says 120 clergy members killed by Russians

Volodymyr Zelensky said around 120 representatives of the clergy were killed by the Russians and around 800 religious sites were destroyed or damaged by Moscow in their ongoing war in Ukraine.

“On purpose, not accidentally, in deliberate attacks on these people, on our churches, and on other religious institutions,” he said in a post on X.

“Around 800 religious sites were destroyed or damaged. Some of them were one thousand years old, subjected to massive drone and missile attacks – both cruise and ballistic.

“It’s awful and crazy. And this is not about money. This is about our heritage, history, art, and architecture. You can’t just renovate them. It is very painful for all of us, and of course for our clergy in the first place.”
