Jason Cundy has explained the origin of his famous Ange Postecoglu mask and the real reason why he’s used it to berate Spurs fans.

Despite the fact they’re now coming off the back of three consecutive wins, it’s no secret that the last couple of years has been a bit of a rollercoaster for Spurs.

Winning the Europa League while narrowly avoiding relegation two seasons in a row has been tough for any Spurs fan to deal with, and it’s even worse you’re sent you countless clips of a man wearing a face mask of former manager Postecoglu and a clown hat.

That man, is former Chelsea and Spurs player Cundy, who, to some, has become the face of Spurs’ downfall in recent years, and now he’s explained exactly why.

Jason Cundy reveals the truth behind the viral Ange Postecoglu mask

Cundy has become a viral sensation in recent years for his relentless teasing of fellow former player Jamie O’Hara over Spurs’ dismal performances as of late.

Central to this banter, has been the infamous Postecoglu mask, which Cundy has now revealed ended up being a bit of an accidental success.

Speaking exclusively to SPORTbible via Aussiecasinos.com, Cundy revealed: “I saw on Instagram that you can buy these masks of all sorts of celebrities. Leonardo DiCaprio, Elvis.

“I got my producer to email them and ask them if they could personalise them because now we’re so visual.

“You know, we can piss about, have a laugh, have some fun and that’s all the masks were.

“So we ordered a Ruben Amorim mask, an Arne Slot mask and the Ange Postecoglu mask, they were the first three that we ordered.

“I think they were from South America or some far-flung place. By the time the Ange mask rocked up, he’d been sacked by Forrest. So it was a bit redundant, I didn’t quite know what to do with it.

“A couple of times I wore the Slot one, but it wasn’t until Spurs were really cr** and I just pulled that Ange one out because, of course, big Ange used to manage Spurs.”

Although he’s not exactly proud of how the mask looks, Cundy admitted that he’s started to enjoy the ridiculous nature of it, while adding why he thinks it’s been such a success.

“There was one day where I remember looking at the monitor and the mask wasn’t quite on my face properly It was hanging off at an angle. And I looked at it and I thought, ‘that’s nuts,” Cundy admitted to SPORTbible.

“That looks crazy. I think the combination of Spurs being totally cr**, the Ange mask at any angle, and me mocking O’Hara. I mean, how can you take anyone seriously?

“Your side’s just been beaten again and it was almost on a weekly basis that this mask came out. And I then started saying, you know, ‘you’re going down, Jay, you’re going down’

“I think the fact that he stormed out the studio a couple of times.

“He said to me once ‘you’re supposed to be a professional broadcaster,’ and I’ve got this mask hanging off the side of my face. The irony of that wasn’t lost on me, but people have gone mad for the mask. It’s been, it’s been crazy, really.”

The Ange mask has since gone massively viral, with clips attracting millions of views across social media, allowing Cundy, and his mask, to become a household name.

Cundy added: “Everyone asks about the mask. I keep walking down the road, ‘have you got your mask on yet?’ I don’t carry it with me! I don’t have it in my back pocket and put it on because someone wants the mask.”

And the boyhood Chelsea fan has revealed that there’s actually several other masks that he’s since brought in, including one that he’s saving for a special occasion.

He revealed: “I’ve got a Jamie Carragher one. I’ve got a Gary Neville one. And I’ve actually got a Jamie O’Hara mask as well, which, you know, I don’t quite know what to do with that yet.”

Jason Cundy explains the real reason why he hates Spurs

For some, Cundy’s apparent hatred of Spurs comes as a surprise given the fact that he spent several years playing for the club, making 28 appearances in total.

Since leaving Spurs, Cundy has opened up about how he reflects on his time at the club, expressing disappointment how they treated his injuries.

However, when asked what led to his passionate disliking of his former club, Cundy admitted that deep down it was nothing more than some banter and friendly rivalry given his passion for boyhood club Chelsea.

Speaking to SPORTbible, he said: “My enjoyment of them struggling just comes from being a Chelsea fan.

“Chelsea and Spurs have got a real deep rivalry. A real deep rivalry. And it goes back a very long time.

“I know everyone will say that Spurs’ biggest game is against Arsenal. And I accept that. But the Chelsea Spurs game, the atmosphere can be really on the edge of hatred, it really can.

“But for Chelsea fans, I think Spurs is one of the biggest, if not the biggest game of our season.”

He added that, with talkSPORT co-host O’Hara being a Spurs fan, this rivalry helps make their show together even better, with their banter reflecting the friendly rivalry enjoyed by mates across the world.

“The fact that Jamie is a Spurs fan works, the dynamic is brilliant. Because we get on, we’re good friends,” Cundy said.

“So When the mic comes on and Spurs got beat again, it’s tough for him sitting there and I’ve got this bloody mask on.

“I don’t think there’s anything cruel about it. I don’t think there’s any bullying. There’s not anything vitriol about it. But it’s just a p***-taking fight, and he deals with it very well, to be fair.”

Of course, O’Hara is the one that got the last laugh after Spurs secured by far their biggest win of the season last month, beating Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to kickstart what could be a bit of a resurgence heading into the festive period.
