Matt Damon has revealed the reason he was absent from the 2024 Academy Awards.
At the time, Damon was part of the ensemble cast of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which received 13 nominations and won seven categories.
In a new interview with GQ magazine, the 56-year-old actor revealed that his partner Luciana was recovering from a major health scare at the time.
Damon said, “We had this whole scary thing happen where my wife had a brain aneurysm.”
“She’s totally fine, thank God, but [she] had this brain surgery the week before the Oscars,” he continued.
“But it was the first night she felt good enough to get up and had her energy back. And she surprised me and got a dress and we went out to the after-party, because she remembered that the last time it happened, I didn’t do it.
“And she was like: ‘This time we’re going out.’ And it was pretty f****** heroic of her to do that and really meaningful.”
Damon explained he previously missed the Oscars when his movie The Departed won four awards in 2007, including Best Picture and Best Director for Martin Scorsese
“I remember I was shooting second unit for The Bourne Ultimatum during that Oscars [where The Departed won], so I didn’t go,” he told GQ.
“I was living in Miami at the time, and I had an infant. [My wife] Lucy [Luciana] and I were laying in bed watching it and so nervous for Marty. And then when he won, I was jumping up and down in the bedroom and I remember being really excited.

“And then the next category was best picture, and The Departed won. And I realized in that moment I hadn’t even considered that that could happen.
“And I turned to Lucy and I was like: ‘S***, we should be there!’ And then the next few weeks, I got all these calls from all the cast and the studio, like: ‘Hey, where were you, man?’ I totally blew it.”
Damon will hope his wife’s good health continues for the 2027 Academy Awards, where he is widely expected to be nominated for Best Actor for his lead role in Nolan’s The Odyssey.
It was recently reported by GoldDerby that six of the film’s stars will be in contention for Oscar nominations: Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, John Leguizamo and Samantha Morton.
Damon will reportedly be considered for Best Actor, Hathaway and Morton for Best Supporting Actress, while Holland, Pattinson and Leguizamo could receive Best Supporting Actor nominations.
Nolan could be in the running to win his second Best Director Oscar, having won for Oppenheimer in 2024.
The nominations will be announced on 21 January, with the ceremony scheduled for 14 March.
