Raphinha has admitted he is looking forward to the challenge of competing with Marcus Rashford this season, saying the England forward’s loan move from Manchester United will only strengthen the Catalan club’s attacking options.
Rashford joined earlier this month on a season-long deal, adding to an already star-studded forward line featuring Raphinha, rising star Lamine Yamal and veteran striker Robert Lewandowski.
Speaking to Diario Sport, the Brazilian winger made it clear that he welcomes the increased fight for starting places.
“When you play with this jersey, with this club, you need to be prepared for all the competition that there is.
“In my opinion, the more competition we have, the better. It means that one helps the other progress and that is the most important thing if we want to win titles.”
Record-breaking season
Raphinha enjoyed a sensational campaign last year, which he described as the best of his career to date. In 56 matches across all competitions, he contributed 34 goals and 25 assists, helping Barca secure a domestic treble of LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Supercopa.
The 28-year-old was particularly devastating in Europe, netting 13 goals and setting up nine more in just 14 Champions League matches as Hansi Flick’s team reached the semifinals.
“I always try to find my best form in training, games, the season,” he said. “I tried that last season, it was better than the previous one, and I will try for this coming season to also be better than the last.”
Champions League ambition
Despite their domestic dominance, Barcelona’s wait for another Champions League title continues – their last success came in 2015. For Raphinha, winning the competition has become a personal mission.
“The Champions League is a personal challenge in my career,” he admitted.
“It’s also a club goal, to win our sixth Champions League title. I, in particular, will do everything possible to make it happen. And I’m sure the players are thinking the same thing.”
Long-term future at Camp Nou
Earlier this summer, Raphinha extended his contract by a further year, committing himself to the club until 2028. Asked whether he could see himself staying beyond that date, the Brazilian left the door open.
“If the club is happy with me, I’ll stay here as long as I can,” he said.
“Obviously, if I see that I’m not playing my best or I’m no longer contributing enough, I’m also aware that it will be time to leave. But, for now, I think I’m fine and in good physical and tactical shape as well.”
