Netflix will remove several high-profile movies from its library during the month of May. One of them is Erin Brockovich, the 2000 legal drama based on a true story.
Directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Julia Roberts as the titular character, Erin Brockovich depicts the story of a paralegal and consumer advocate who helped build a case against Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) over groundwater contamination in the early 1990s.
When is ‘Erin Brockovich’ leaving Netflix?
According to What’s on Netflix’s Kasey Moore, Erin Brockovich will be off Netflix on May 1, one of over a dozen movies exiting the service that day.
Other prominent titles being dropped May 1 include 1984’s Dune, the Mission: Impossible series and the first three movies of the Jaws franchise.
‘Erin Brockovich’ was an immediate hit
Granted a $52 million budget, the movie grossed over $256 million worldwide. It was also nominated for numerous Academy Awards, with Roberts winning Best Actress; she also took home the same honor at the Golden Globes, MTV Movie Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Additionally, Albert Finney won multiple awards for best supporting male actor, and Soderbergh became the first director in over 60 years to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Directorfor two different films (Erin Brockovich, Traffic) in the same year. He won the honor for Traffic.
Named one of the top 10 movies of 2000 by the American Film Institute, Erin Brockovich has an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.5/10 mark on IMDB.
Roberts headlined impressive cast
In addition to Roberts playing Brockovich, Albert Finney starred as lawyer Edward L. Masry, Brockovich’s boss who filed the successful lawsuit, with Aaron Eckhart playing George, Brockovich’s biker boyfriend.
Other cast members included Marg Helgenberger, Tracey Walter, Peter Coyote, Conchata Ferrell and Cherry Jones. The real-life Brockovich and Masry had cameos as a waitress and diner patron.
During an appearance on The Late Show last November, Roberts told host Stephen Colbert that the entire process of filming Erin Brockovich was “easy.”
“You know, it doesn’t take an enormous amount of effort to do acting…. But it was so easy, that movie. Everybody was so easy. There was just a flow. The days were great, and it was just a job that felt very kind to the inside of me,” Roberts said, via PEOPLE.
Erin Brockovich is available for Netflix subscribers for only 11 more days, but the movie can also be purchased on YouTube, Google Play, Apple TV, Fandango and Amazon Prime Video.
