Carlo Ancelotti says Brazil are ready to make a strong start to their World Cup campaign as they prepare to face Morocco in their opening match at MetLife Stadium.
The Brazilian head coach struck a calm and confident tone during his pre-match press conference, insisting his side are capable of competing with any team in the tournament.
Brazil begin their campaign against a Morocco side Ancelotti regards as one of Africa’s strongest nations, but the Italian believes his squad are well prepared for the challenge ahead.
‘We are ready’
Ancelotti said the mood within the camp has been positive throughout preparations and expressed confidence in Brazil’s prospects beyond their opening fixture.
“We have a good feeling about this World Cup,” he said.
“Not only for this first match, but for the tournament as a whole. We have worked hard and we are ready. The players are prepared.”
The former Real Madrid, AC Milan and Chelsea manager described himself as an optimist and reiterated his belief that Brazil have the quality required to challenge for the biggest prize in international football.
Respect for Morocco
Despite Brazil’s status as one of the tournament favourites, Ancelotti warned against underestimating Morocco.
The 67-year-old praised the organisation and quality of the North African side, pointing to the increasing competitiveness of international football.
“In modern football there are no small teams,” he said.
“Morocco are one of the strongest teams in Africa and a very well-prepared side.
“We expect a difficult match against a team that is organised and knows exactly how it wants to play.”
Ancelotti added that Brazil’s focus will be on producing a disciplined and structured performance in their opening game.
Positive update on Neymar
The Brazil coach also provided an update on Neymar, who continues to work his way back to full fitness after joining up with the squad.
Ancelotti remains hopeful the forward could return to action in the near future.
“Neymar is working very hard and we are doing everything possible to help him recover as quickly as we can,” he said.
“We believe there is a good chance he could be available next week.
“He is important not only because of his technical ability, but also because of his experience and the example he sets for the younger players in the group.”
Goal celebrations still welcome
Ancelotti was also asked about FIFA’s recent efforts to reduce time-wasting and whether players would still be free to celebrate goals with dances and choreographed routines.
The Brazil boss dismissed any concerns.
“The new rule does not prevent players from dancing,” he said.
“It is designed to improve control of the game’s timing.
“Players can celebrate however they want as long as it is done respectfully.”
